[SOLVED] am i right or wrong???
hello to all.
i have made the mistake of joining bt for broadband as i wanted bt vision. i got 8mb broadband and everything was ok for a while. now my broadband speed has dropped very low and i can no longer watch on demand as im getting speeds of around 1.6mb. i have rang bt to tell them to have a word but they say because their test shows; Your DSL connection rate: 8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) IP profile for your line is - 2000 kbps Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 1633 kbps my download speed is actually 8mb so my line is very fast and therefore nothing wrong with it. i tried to explain that that is my maximum connection rate (8128) and my actual download speed is 1633 as it says above. can anyone clear this up for me as im getting pretty fed up speaking to people that clearly know less about broadband than i do. thanks jim

Re: am i right or wrong???
any clues on what i should do then? bt insist my download speed is 8mb but i think its clearly running at 1.6mb.
they say if it is running at less than 1.8mb then they have to do something about it, which it is. but as they have no clue what they are talking about they are not willing to do anything.

Re: am i right or wrong???
How are you determining the up/down rates? Have you tried an Internet speed test? Can you post the actual results here?
Register at DSLReports and run their Line Quality Tests. It's best to run this test with a direct wired connection to eliminate any wireless issues from the results. It's useful many times to run this test several times, and we'd like to see each of the results. Post the results link from the top of the test display page for each test run here. The link to post is near the top of the page and looks like: If you wish to post this result to a forum, please copy/paste this URL http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2357195 <- sample only, yours will obviously be different! and your IP will be disguised. Copy/paste that link here. Note: You will have to enable PING (ICMP) request response either in your router (if you have one), or in your computer's firewall for direct modem connections. This is very important to get the most important part of the test to run.

Re: am i right or wrong???
yes i have done lots of speed tests, the results from bt (my isp) were posted in the first post. if that makes sense!
but on the whole there doesnt seem to be a massive difference when i do the speed tests on different sites, i am hard wired so loss of signal on wireless is not a factor to include. generally i am getting download speeds of between 1.3mb and 1.7mb. upload speeds are between 300kb to 518 kb. so bts speed test was coming out with fairly high speeds compared to some others. but i will have a few goes at the other testing site you mentioned and see what they come up with. thanks jim.

Re: am i right or wrong???
the dslreport server is down at the mo. i have done another test on bt and they came out very similar again but still low;
Best Effort Test: -provides background information. Your DSL connection rate: 8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) IP profile for your line is - 2000 kbps Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 1646 kbps 2. Assured Rate Test: -provides background information. Assured Rate IP profile on your line is - 500 kbps Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 586 kbps www.speedtest.net is rating me at a fairly similar speed; download is 1571kb and upload is 369kb. hope this helps. cheers jim.

Re: am i right or wrong???
ok ive had another ***** at bt and they are now saying my download speed is 7150kb, i have told them that i cannot achieve close to 1000kb in terms of download speed. think the most i have ever got is around 500kb from the avg update server.
they are now suggesting that the speed is being lost within my house (6.5mb??) and are suggesting i should buy an i-plate which can be found at http://www.shop.bt.com/ProductView.aspx?Quicklinx=58LT might this actually work? and i still am not convinced as everything worked fine until my speed dropped, so why should i pay good money for something that was not a problem previously?

Re: am i right or wrong???
Connect your router to the test socket inside the phone master socket. That will rule out any internal extension wiring problems. Run your speed tests using that setup.
I think you hit the nail on the head with your opening statement "i have made the mistake of joining bt for broadband". You'll get lots of promises from BT and the other big ISPs, but if you want service when you need it, you'll need to go with one of the smaller outfits who are motivated to keep their customers. Rule out the house extension wiring. Don't spend money on the iplate - there's DIY ways to achieve the same result. If you're still getting low speeds using the test socket, you'll just need to shout at B(roken) T(echnology) again. |

Re: am i right or wrong???
i ran the speed tests from the test socket, made no difference anywhere else other than bts speed test which showed an increase of 70kbs. hardly worth screaming about.
on the plus side bt have admitted there is something a miss with the shameful speeds i receive and an engineer is aparently going to turn up today. not too hopeful of the outcome but you never know he might have a slight clue. i am however more interested in the DIY methods you mentioned. anything to get this hunk of junk to make me believe its not 1997 and i no longer run a 56k external modem!!!

Re: am i right or wrong???
well bt engineer just been round, he says the fools in india are fookin useless too!!
but as far as my speed goes not so good. he says sync is 8.1mb rnr? is 6.5mb and loop is 3.5mb with no faults on the line. no clue from him as to why my speed is so slow, he was actually laughing at the speed test results!! cheers gary .... but he has managed to clear up a cap that was placed on my line, so in his words "hopefully it will improve in the next few hours" but still more on the DIY solutions to better speeds if anyone is up for sharing some knowledge.

Re: am i right or wrong???
well download speed is currently 6895kb/s according to speedtest.net and there is a definite increase in download and page loading time, so i guess its solved for the time being.........
thanks to those who replied. jim
