problem recognizing dsl modem

Hi. I have a lenovo ideacentre k210 that came with vista home basic. I recently tried to set up a dual boot system with my old xp pro disc. XP boots fine, but does not recognize my dsl modem, a speedstream 5100. When I try to set up a connection I get "error 769". Any suggestions?

My system:
300gb hd partitioned as 260gb vista home basic and 20gb xp pro
Pentium dual 2ghz
1gb RAM

Re: problem recognizing dsl modem

llogg,

This is a known issue with XP, specifically when upgrading.
google "error 769", there are step by step instructions on the first result.

Verify your network card is turned on and correct drivers are installed.

Re: problem recognizing dsl modem

Thanks for the help. I followed those steps and my network card is enabled, but I still get the same error. I also downloaded all XP drivers for my system from Lenovo and installed them, but this did not help. Google search turned up some items that suggest the speedstream 5100 functions as a router and does not require a driver, so I'm not sure about that. Any other suggestions?

Re: problem recognizing dsl modem

The Speedstream is indeed a modem/router, and no driver is required to use it.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2/SP3.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

Note: Type only the text in bold for the following commands.

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults, type: netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults, type: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reboot the machine.

With the cable connected to the modem/router, I'd like to see this.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

I:\Documents and Settings\matt>

Re: problem recognizing dsl modem

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type devmgmt.msc

Please respond to all the following steps.
  1. Under Network adapters, please tell me all the devices listed.
  2. Are there any devices under Network adapters that have a red x displayed?
  3. Also, are there any devices anywhere in the Device Manager display with yellow ? or ! displayed?

---

1. 1394 Net Adapter
2. No
3. Yes: Under "Other Devices" listed with yellow ? are Brother HL-2040 Series, Ethernet Controller, PCI device, PCI Simple Communications Controller, SM Bus Controller, Unknown Device, VF0350 Live Cam Video IM, and Video Controller (VGA Compatible). Also Communications Port (COM3) has a yellow !.

I'm guessing all that yellow punctuation is related to the problem. Do I need to try and track down drivers for all those things? How do I know what drivers to look for for Ethernet Controller or PCI device, etc? Thanks for your help.

Re: problem recognizing dsl modem

You are missing many of the drivers, and yes, you have to find them and install them.

Start at the laptop manufacturer's website.

Re: problem recognizing dsl modem

I have downloaded and installed every XP driver on the manufacturer's site for this machine. How would I go about discovering additional drivers to download? Thanks.

Re: problem recognizing dsl modem

I finally tracked down the correct Ethernet driver and can connect to the internet. Still haven't found all the other missing drivers, though. Particularly annoying, I think, is that the sound card seems to not work. I'll need to keep working on that, but I just wanted to say thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I blame Lenovo for providing incorrect drivers on their website. Cheers.
