SpeedStream6721 - disconnecting internet

I have a SpeedStream6721 modem/router. My vista machine which is a HP TouchSmart PC has inbuilt wireless LAN. It use to connect and stay connected fine, with great signal. Recently the signal strength from computer to modem/router has dropped. I havent gotten any new devices or electronics that would cause interference.

Secondly, the internet drops without warning. I noticed just yesterday that sometimes even the internet light on the modem isnt on either. But i think that this has been fixed as there was a loose connection to the phone socket. I am still noticing loss of connection when sitting at the computer.

Also, this has happened twice now my computer went to a bluescreen and told me that something had happened to some hardware and the computer was shut down the prevent further damage. Once i restart my 802.11abg wireless LAN is reinstalled. Why?

I was also thinking maybe i should change channels, but i am not sure how to do this or what channel to set it at??

Is there something wrong with the inbuilt Wireless LAN or my modem? Or is it something completely different.

Any further information required feel free to ask.

Re: SpeedStream6721 - disconnecting internet

Well, it sounds like you may have several issues. One is the wireless channel, it appears you may have a neighbor that recently installed wireless networking and is conflicting with your signal.

I don't find a user's manual for your router, but in general you use the web based setup screens in the router to access the wireless configuration.

The bluescreens are telling me you have driver or hardware issues. I'd download and reload the latest drivers for the wireless hardware to see if that helps.

Re: SpeedStream6721 - disconnecting internet

I tried to update the HP Wireless LAN Driver from the HP site. I downloaded and went to install it and got " your system does not meet the minimum requirements for this update. update has been cancelled (9996)

Requirements:
You must be logged on as an administrator to install this update.
You must have a Microsoft Windows Vista 32-bit operating system.

I run it as administrator, i am the administrator and i have a 32 bit system.

I have found where to change the wireless channel, now what channel should i try... its currently channel 5!

Re: SpeedStream6721 - disconnecting internet

If your in the US then most routers will default to channel 11, I would try channel 1 or 6. Quote from previous post:
