Modem won't work without router!

I'm really not clued up on computers so any advice would be much appreciated. We were running our HP Pavillion desktop fine with a Virgin modem using a usb connection for 3 years. We recently bought a Dynamode router and set it up, this time with the ethernet cable, but it appeared faulty and wouldn't connect so while we waited for a new one to arrive we had no internet connection as the modem refused to get a new ip address! Once the new one came we put that in and we could get internet connection again. Now our modem won't speak to the pc unless the router is plugged in! We also have a yellow ? on the ethernet controller so I don't know if that has anything to do with it. I have tried to update the drivers from HP but it hasn't got rid of the yellow ?. Please help. Thanks

Re: Modem won't work without router!

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model and hardware version of the router (if a separate unit).
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP (Home or Pro), SP1-SP2-SP3, Vista (Home, Business, Ultimate), etc.
The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.

Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.

  • If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms?
  • For wireless issues, have you disabled all encryption on the router to see if you can connect that way?
  • Have you connected directly to the broadband modem to see if this is a router or modem/ISP issue? Note that you MUST cycle power on the modem whenever you change the devices attached to any interface!
  • If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally?

On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

Type the following commands on separate lines, following each one with the Enter key:

PING 206.190.60.37

PING yahoo.com

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Modem won't work without router!

ISP is Virgin media.

Broadband Modem says - Model number e08c013.00 and trade name is Ambit??

Router is Dynamode BR-6004 W-G1 (802.11g wireless router)

Connection type was wired with ethernet to modem but we now have the router conncted as the modem won't work without it!

I'm not sure what you mean by encryption used sorry, though the router says it is capable of 128-bit WEP, WPA, WPA2.

Using Windows XP and internet explorer browser.

Problem: We were using a broadband modem for 3 years with no problems for 3 then due to buying a laptop and wanting to use it wireless we purchased a router. The router was faulty so we had to remove it and wait for another and once we'd removed the router the pc wouldn't allow the modem to obtain an ip address so we had no internet connection. Once we put the new router in we had connection again! So basically, the modem now relies on the router to get a connection. I know the problem is with the pc or router as our laptop connects fine with the ethernet to the modem.

Re: Modem won't work without router!

I'm confused, that shows a good connection to the Internet. Is this the computer that has a yellow ? on the NIC in Device Manager? That doesn't seem possible!

Re: Modem won't work without router!

My connection is fine at the moment because the router is in. As soon as I disconnect the router I lose connection even with the modem still connected. My problem is that I might not wish to keep the router for a long period of time but it seems I have no choice! The yellow ? is on the ethernet controller.

Thanks again for your time.

Re: Modem won't work without router!

I think the problem has something to do with the fact that our pc won't allow the modem to automatically give an ip address, it is now stuck with the address of the router even though we have had a new modem installed so when the router is taken away we can't get a connection from the modem because the pc is relying on the routers ip address.

Re: Modem won't work without router!

How would I do that? The ntl guy who installed the new modem told us that the problem was with the pc. He said he didn't know why but it wasn't allowing the modem to automatically give itself an ip address as it should. I wonder if this has something to do with the settings of the router! It has me baffled.

Thanks

Re: Modem won't work without router!

Unplug the modem from the power for 30 seconds and plug it back in after you connect the computer. The NTL guy doesn't know what he's talking about!
