Internet will only run in Safe Mode

I'm running Vista Home Basic. Before moving, Comcast was my internet provider and everything ran fast and fine. After moving, Charter Internet became my provider. When I attempted to connect to the internet it would barely connect to my homepage if at all before I'd get the message that the server timed out. I contacted Charter assuming it was their problem, however after the rep ran me through a couple tests, she asked me to start my comp in safe mode. It was then I discovered my comp connects to the internet fast and runs fast and fine in Safe Mode only. The rep told me their was something on my comp causing my problem. I don't understand how it could work fine with one provider and not another. I didn't add or remove any programs between moving. Any help would be appreciated!

Re: Internet will only run in Safe Mode

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model and hardware version of the router (if a separate unit).
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP (Home or Pro), SP1-SP2-SP3, Vista (Home, Business, Ultimate), etc.
The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.

Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.

  • If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms?
  • For wireless issues, have you disabled all encryption on the router to see if you can connect that way?
  • Have you connected directly to the broadband modem to see if this is a router or modem/ISP issue?
  • If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally?

On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

Type the following commands on separate lines, following each one with the Enter key:

PING 206.190.60.37

PING yahoo.com

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Internet will only run in Safe Mode

Thank you for replying and for your help. The following is the information you requested:

Name of your ISP - Charter Communications
Make and exact model of the broadband modem - Motorola Surfboard SB-5101
No Router
Connection type - Wired
Internet Browser - Firefox & IE

My problem - In regular Windows mode my computer will either connect extremely slow or will not connect at all to the internet. I received the error message below when attempting to connect to this site in regular mode to post my reply.

Re: Internet will only run in Safe Mode

You appear to have significant line quality issues.

Please boot in Safe Mode with Networking and repeat the same ping tests and IPCONFIG /ALL display, post the results here. I want to see if this is something on the machine or your ISP connection.

In Safe Mode the internet is fast. I just don't want to keep running my computer in Safe Mode.

Re: Internet will only run in Safe Mode

I've tried to download the program in Safe Mode, regular mode and in IE and Firefox but keep getting the same thing:
