capped d/l speed router>PC, but not with switch>router>PC

Hello

This is a problem that has plagued me for over a week now, and I've tried what feels like thousands of different things to correct it with no luck.

We have DSL that is supposed to be at 1800kpbs.

The problem is I can't get those speeds when running through only the router. When I run through my switch alone or switch and then router it is fine.

Here the the scenarios:
Box>PC = 1598
Box>Switch>PC = 1557
Box>Router>PC = 300
Box>Switch>Router>PC = 1563
It is like this for all the PCs and I've tried different patch cables at every step as well.

We have five PCs in a very looooong house and I'd like to get my 360 and one computer hooked up downstairs without having to run cat5 the length of the house twice. So I'd like to have it go from the box to the router, where the 360 and PC would be plugged in. Then have it go to the other end of the house to the switch and have the other PCs hooked there. That way we can all have the same DHCP server.

Anybody have any ideas?

Also, where the WAN cable goes in on the switch it gives me a orange light signifying 10mbs speed instead of the others (running to PCs) which are green meaning 100mbs. Could this have something to do with it?

Specs:
Belkin N1 Wireless Router (5 port Ethernet)
Model #: F5D8231-4

D-Link 5 port Switch
Model #: DES-1105

Solarus is my ISP

The internet is run through a Next Level Communications box that runs internet/phone/cable TV.

If I can provide any more information that would help let me know!!!

Thanks in advance to all the take their time to read this

I may be getting ahead of myself, but does anybody know of some good 3rd party firmware upgrades for the Belkin router?

I've got up-to-date firmware installed but I suspect that may be the problem.

Have you gone into the router's configuration and changed the WAN MTU size? I'd start with 1492 and see if that helps.

thanks for responding

Our DSL connection doesn't use PPPoE and there is no way to change the MTU size without changing the WAN connection from dynamic to PPPoE.

Perhaps you can give us the exact make/model of the modem?

The modem was just replaced today. Just like two hours ago actually, I had them come to add HDTV and they replaced the modem that controls cable tv, phone lines, and internet as well.
Still having the same problem...

I put my neighbors Linksys router in and it worked flawlessly, so looks like it's the router.

Sounds like I might be replacing this one... sucks, it's only a month old.

Here are the specs on the modem:
Motorola
Next Level Communications
Model # R62CV30000

Hmm... That model number doesn't seem to exist. However, since you seem to be inditing the router, let's try this.

Some things you can try here.
  1. For wireless connections, change the channel on the router, I like channels 1, 6, and 11 in the US.
  2. For wireless connections, try moving either the wireless router/AP or the wireless computer. Even a couple of feet will sometimes make a big difference.
  3. Update the firmware to the latest version available on the manufacturer's site.
  4. Reset the router to factory defaults and reconfigure.

Many times these measures will resolve a lot of intermittent issues.
