Ethernet connection problem
Hi All,
I have an IBM thinkpad laptop that I had given me, and xp is loaded onto it.....I am trying to connect to the Internet via my own cable that is used on my tower system. The network adapter in the laptop is an intel Pro/100+minipci. I have downloaded drivers for the card and have been installed correctly....When it comes to plugging in my Ethernet connection it will not connect to the Internet. All cable software and drivers have been installed also but still to no avail. One thing I did notice was that when I plugged in the Ethernet cable, windows did not inform me it had found the cable....I'm sure if it recognizes the cable, it will solve all my problems...but how do I get it to do that...Any ideas? |

Re: Ethernet connection problem
Hold the Windows key and press R, then type devmgmt.msc
Please respond to all the following steps.
Let's see this as well. Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt: In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command: Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command. IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Ethernet connection problem
Hi John,
Have been into device manager before and all is clean and green...no red x or yellow?.....I did what you said after and this is the result of the task: Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>IPCONFIG /ALL Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : IBM-IVWE8XBIO1N Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Broadcast IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 3: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Intel(R) PRO/100+ MiniPCI Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 0.0.0.0 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 0.0.0.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.255 C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator> I have to say after reading this, that my IP address shows up when I did a diagnostic on the network card but doesn't show up on the IPCONFIG..gets more interesting by the minute. Ken. |

Re: Ethernet connection problem
Does it show the cable is connecte in Network Connections? Also, are there other computers working off the same modem that connect fine? Do you have another network cable just to make sure its not that (yes i know.. rare but it HAS happened). If there are no other computers connected to that modem double check the dsl status light and make sure the LAN on the modem are working properly. Do you have a router in between?
