Modem Router Problems
I have ADSL with a nextell 6100 Modem connected to a Belkin G series Wireless router connected to a Linksys 8 port switch that sends internet signal to all the rooms in my house. I have 2 desktops and 2 laptops. The desktops connect to the network through a patch cable and the laptops connect via wireless most of the time. My question is:
Why is it that every time I shut down or re-start the desktop computers I have to re-start the modem and router, otherwise these 2 computers won't be able to connect to the internet nor my whole network? Is it the modem or the router? but the laptops when connected wireless are ok. By the way the desktops run Xp Home SP2 and XP Pro SP 2 Thanks for your help |

Re: Modem Router Problems
It would be useful to see this for one of the desktops while connected and when it doesn't connect.
Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt: In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command: Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command. IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Modem Router Problems
That's obviously connected, how about when it's not connected?

Re: Modem Router Problems
This is when is not giving me any connection to the internet. I try opening a website and the system gets to a blank page but never downloads the actual page. For instance I open my home page "Yahoo". The computer opens the browser and gives me a blank page and after a few moments it says something like connection timed out or something like that. but if I re-start the modem and router then the as soon as those two are up and running, the browser loads the pages really fast.
I think it is a problem between the router and the modem; and I leaning towards the modem because I think if it was the router then the computer would loose the ip address. Am I right or what do you think? Thanks for your help |

Re: Modem Router Problems
Try these simple tests.
Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt: In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key: IPCONFIG /ALL PING <computer_IP_address> PING <default_gateway_address> PING 206.190.60.37 PING yahoo.com Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard. Paste the results in a message here. <computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. <default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Modem Router Problems
Can't put my finger on the problem from what you have posted so far but one thing in your IP information strikes me as strange.
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.1 192.168.1.254 These DNS servers exist on your local network - this is possible but not likely. It is also possible that your router is set up to redirect these but again that is not common. |
