Cry [SOLVED] Connection to router is fine, but no internet (straight-to-modem works fine)

I needed some help a while ago and got a fast and usable answer, so I really hope you can help me out this time too.

We are running a setup with modem, two wireless routers connected via a crossed cable to which two computers are connected. All of a sudden one day, I started experiencing connectivity problems; the two laptopscould suddenly not connect to the internet, although both can achieve LAN connection to the router as usual.

Computer 1 is connected to the router via wireless, while comp. 2 is connected via cable, with equal results. I tried switching connection modes, but still the same

The strange thing is that if I try and plug the wired computer straight into the modem, I can easily be granted internet access, which has made me suspect the router to be the source of the trouble.

Hardware

Computer 1: Win XP SP2, Firefox/Opera (no difference), wireless

Computer 2: Win XP SP2, Firefox, cable

Router: :zolid (no-name brand) running "SOHO Routing" software, model:"Wireless G-Routing"

Modem: Provided by ESS Bredbaand A/S (ISP), unknown brand and model, not specified

I tried running a few commands via the CMD, and although it is in Danish, I hope you understand the most of it.

Two wireless routers with a crossover? What are you trying to do?

Re: Connection to router is fine, but no internet (straight-to-modem works fine)

I have my reasons, it has got something to do with the type of materials of which our house is build, which leads to a huge loss of connectivity, and while we have family members who occasionally want to use the internet, this is how we figured it out.

But I do not believe this to be the problem, as the routers worked fine previously. To try and eliminate possible sources of the error, I have disconnected the second router and reset the first, so that it once again acts a single router, but even with the main router only, there is still a problem.

Re: Connection to router is fine, but no internet (straight-to-modem works fine)

How EXACTLY are the two routers connected? What ports on each router are you using? FWIW, here's how I connect multiple routers.

Connecting two (or more) SOHO broadband routers together.

Note: The "primary" router can be an actual router, a software gateway like Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing, or a server connection that has the capability to supply more than one IP address using DHCP server capability. No changes are made to the primary "router" configuration.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router(s) to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100, I'd assign the secondary router 192.168.0.254 as it's IP address, 192.168.0.253 for another router, etc.

Note: Do this first, as you will have to reboot the computer to connect to the router again for the remaining changes.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router, channels, encryption, etc.

Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there is no uplink port and neither of the routers have auto-sensing ports, use a cross-over cable. Leave the WAN port unconnected!

This procedure bypasses the routing function (NAT layer) and configures the router as a switch (or wireless access point for wireless routers).

For reference, here's a link to a Typical example config using a Netgear router

Re: Connection to router is fine, but no internet (straight-to-modem works fine)

I already did that as I set up the routers several weeks ago, that is why I emphasised that the routers were working. Until the day before yesterday, everything was fine.

The issue is not having two routers not working together, but that the main gateway does not seem to allow internet access, though I can easily be granted LAN. The second router is unplugged, and the gateway is reset to the original state (as it was when we had only that, and it worked).

If I plug the LAN cable from the computer straight into the modem, everything works. That is why I believe that there is a false setting in the gateway or so, since it seems to be the problem.

Re: Connection to router is fine, but no internet (straight-to-modem works fine)

My guess is that the base address of the two routers is in the same subnet, but since I don't have detailed specifications for the routers, that's just a guess.

If the gateway used to work when reset to defaults, and now it doesn't, that would seem to indicate it may be defective. That assumes that nothing else changed around it...

Re: Connection to router is fine, but no internet (straight-to-modem works fine)

Apparently, it was one of the ports on the modem that caused the issue.

I switched to the other LAN-port on the modem, and now it's working again. So, no worries. :)

But thanks for the help anyway.
