speeding up my router
So I have a belkin wireless G router - 2.4Ghz-802.11g
And I've had this for ages now. I've always experienced a little lag with games, but since I reset my router (clicked the little reset button on it), It had been having MORE than lag in games. This is bad because I'm getting a new gaming PC on saturday. Basically, I'll have a little lag every now and then, but sometimes it just freezes in the middle of my game (urban terror), and says "connection interrupted". So it stayed like that for around 20 minutes when I decided to start the game again, and the same happened some half an hour or so after. So, my question is, does anyone have any tips to stop this from happening, and making it as speedy as possible for when I get my new gaming PC? (which I mainly got for online play)... Re: speeding up my router
Just a question?
What makes you think this is the router causing your issue. Does the PC act the same way if it is directly connected to the Modem? When you recycled the router did you recycle the modem first, then the router, then the computer? Meaning unplug all sysytems and follow the order above. A wireless connection is almost half speed of what you may get on a direct modem connection (causing Lag). I am not a pro on this, but I do know the way to recycle these devices should follow the order above. Bill |

Re: speeding up my router
If you are wireless connected to the router, nothing (But you will lag)
To hardwire you should have extra ports on the router (maybe 4 ports). Just use a Cat5 cable to connect DIRECTLY to the router or MODEM to the laptop or PC, (about $5.00 for a CAT5 network cable) You should beable to connect DIRECTLY to the router (HARDWIRE CAT5 cable) and see if you have the same issues. If you do, you may have other issues besides the router. Bill |

Re: speeding up my router
well, I dont have an extra wire ATM. But i plugged it straight from the modem into my laptop, and ignored the router, and there was no lag. So now I know it's the wireless. However, when I get my gaming PC, it will be upstairs, So I'm going to need the wire to be threaded through a hole in the ceiling, and then plugged in. So I'm going to need a very long wire as well. So it's obviously a professional's job. How much do you think it would cost to do that?

Re: speeding up my router
I am not sure of your location
![]() Usually (Depending on your ISP), it may cost nothing. BE NICE and throw the person a TIP! But if you have already had this setup (Down Stairs) they will charge you MORE to ADD the extra LINE and MAY charge you You would have to with your check your ISP. If you did it yourself and HAVE along enough cable (UNDER 100 Feet) you could do it cheaper ( A hole in the cieling and electrical staples) A PRO (or ISP) may charge you alot , but if you are constructive and had a long enough CAT5 cable you could do it yourself.Just plug in the cable to the router and run it to your PC upstairs. The only other option you have is to put in a WIRELESS PCI CARD in your NEW Gaming machine, but again you will have LAG. Bill |
