D-Link G604T router & XP SP3 Problem
I recently accepted an automatic update from Microsoft for XP SP3. Since then, I have the following problem with my DSL connection:
1) After a full router restart, I will be able to briefly surf the internet, do DNS lookup etc. 2) Soon after (a minute of so) the dns stops working. I am able to ping the router and the other side of the DSL connection (ISP's IP) but nothing else. I suspect that this is do do with 'option 43' in DHCP issues: http://news.softpedia.com/news/XP-SP...gs-88474.shtml Though I may be wrong. My router is a D-Link G604T which they no longer support. Anyway, I've tried uninstalling SP3, but it appears that whatever breaking changes were made are not rolled back fully (problem persists) So my question is, what are my options? 1) New Router 2) Reinstall Windows 3) Anything else less painful/expensive? thanks, Simon |

Re: D-Link G604T router & XP SP3 Problem
Did you try installing the hotfix mentioned in the MSKB article?
Truthfully, this doesn't sound anything like that issue. Since you get a connection initially, it would seem that DHCP does get the correct info. Let's see this when the problem surfaces. Try these simple tests. Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt: In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key: IPCONFIG /ALL PING <computer_IP_address> PING <default_gateway_address> PING 206.190.60.37 PING yahoo.com Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard. Paste the results in a message here. <computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. <default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: D-Link G604T router & XP SP3 Problem
Hi - thanks for getting back. Yeah, 'option 43' was a shot in the dark I confess.
As I'm not at home just now so I can't post the relevant ipconfig /all but I can tell you that it all looks fine - e.g. Default Gateway, DHCP Server, DNS Server are all set to the values I'd expect (and if I switch between automatic DNS and static, the values update as expected). I can ping the local machine and the router but nothing else (e.g. google or another IP address). I'll try to get all this info and post it later anyway. More background: I updated the Wireless router software to the version here: http://www.dlink.co.uk/?go=gNTyP9Cnp...wsESvuziNC+g== I've tried switching between auto and manual DNS settings both on the router and the adaptor. Also updated the wireless adaptor and Ethenet drivers as per the Acer website I can connect to the D-Link router via ethernet, but the problem remains the same: can ping the local computer and the router but cannot get any further (e.g. pinging yahoo, doing DNS lookup). I can connect to other wireless networks and have connected via ethernet at work - all works no problem, so i appears that my network adaptors are OK post SP3 install. hope that helps a bit? |
