[SOLVED] Di 524 D-Link questions

Hi,
I'm new to this site and i need some help.
when i purchased my router i had to talk to d-link tech support for like 20 minutes or so.
My router got reset, and now i dont know what i have to do, and its past the 3yrs so i'd have to pay (which i cant afford as a college student)

I have an actiontec gateway DSL router, and i need to hook my DI-524 router to it.
I remember part of it had something to do with IP addresses because in both setups i see that they use the same address of http://192.168.0.1 but there is a little more to it. does anyone know the steps to go through or which things i have to change?

Yep, you have to do one of two things.

Change the DI-524 base address to something like 192.168.2.1.

or...

Configure the DI-524 as a WAP.

Connecting two (or more) SOHO broadband routers together.

Note: The "primary" router can be an actual router, a software gateway like Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing, or a server connection that has the capability to supply more than one IP address using DHCP server capability. No changes are made to the primary "router" configuration.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router(s) to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100, I'd assign the secondary router 192.168.0.254 as it's IP address, 192.168.0.253 for another router, etc.

Note: Do this first, as you will have to reboot the computer to connect to the router again for the remaining changes.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router, channels, encryption, etc.

Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there is no uplink port and neither of the routers have auto-sensing ports, use a cross-over cable. Leave the WAN port unconnected!

This procedure bypasses the routing function (NAT layer) and configures the router as a switch (or wireless access point for wireless routers).

Wow, thanks for the info. I'm going to try to do what you said after some homework, if not though i will be trying that tomorrow. Thanks again, i'll post after i try it to let you know if i got it to work.

I just got the time to try out the fix. Thank you very much, I had tried to change the IP address on it before but i was putting it within the realm of the DHCP of the primary router, and i also was not restarting the router or my computer after these changes. You made my life much easier and saved me the 50bucks for a new router.
