large data transfers hang my modem/router

I'm using a Sky broadband connection with their default wireless modem/router, the Netgear DG834GT and their latest firmware release.
I recently bought a network hard disk, and noticed that I couldn't move more than about 8Gb to it without having to reset the router at the power switch. It didn't happen however when I ran a cable from my laptop/desktop directly into the back of the disk and avoided the router entirely.

I then decided to test the router a little more thoroughly and found that regardless of where the data was coming from and going to the router hangs at around the 8Gb mark. The only thing that seemed to have a bearing on the hang point was the size of the files - very large files meant that I could move slightly more than 8Gb.

Is this a common problem with wireless modem/router boxes, or something unique to the model/brand/one that I have? Does anyone have any suggestions for a fix, as Sky's only suggestion was "Don't move so much data around"

Re: large data transfers hang my modem/router

I don't think that this has anything to do with Sky, so you're wasting your time talking to them. Data moving on the local network doesn't go to the WAN side of the router.

It seems there's an issue with the router. Have you tried resetting it to factory defaults and reconfiguring?

Re: large data transfers hang my modem/router

The thing is that Netgear have exported the technical support agreement to Sky so while it's nothing to do with their network it's on "their" equipment.
I'll try a factory reset, it's also on "Sky specific" firmware, do you think it's a good idea to put it onto the netgear official firmware?

I can't say if it would even work with other firmware. Is it possible to connect your own router to the Sky service, I'm not really familiar with it.

Re: large data transfers hang my modem/router

I think it should be, even if not I could just connect one of the sky router ports to a new wired/wireless switch and run all my connections through that.
I don't want to pay a handful of cash for something that doesn't cure the problem, is it common or have I just got a dodgy router from Sky?

Re: large data transfers hang my modem/router

I've moved 100's of gigabytes over my network using several different routers, and I've never seen an issue like this.

I think I'd get my own router.
