SBC Yahoo DSL connection with Speedstream 5100 and XP
I have a new Toshiba laptop with XP SP1 that I am trying to connect with the SBC Yahoo DSL via a speedstream 5100 modem (5 lights). Here's what happens:
1. The windows 98 desktop I have connects just fine with or without my D-Link router. 2. The XP laptop doesn't connect with or without the D-Link router in the middle. Instead, it gets the following configuration when I run ipconfig. Auto config enabled:yes Auto adress: 169.254.69.102 Subnet:255.255.0.0 Gateway:(blank) If I try and renew with ipconfig /renew, I get the following message: "An error occured while renewing interface Local Area Connection : unable to contact you DCHP server. Request timed out". The '98 desktop gets an IP of 192.168.xxx.xxx kind with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, which this one gets a very different IP and a missing Gateway! Obviously, I cannot ping or connect with any other machine I know of. The laptop works just fine at work with DHCP, so the port is OK. I talked with the SBC Support folks and the Toshiba support folks, but they couldn't figure this one out. Any help on this is very appreciated. |

if its not getting an IP aside from 169.x.x.x either from the modem or router, then the problem is with the computer.. you may need to reinstall the TCP/IP on this machine.. (corrupt TCP/IP stack, winsok error)..
