Cool Re: PPPoE Connection

Again, this is for the sake of expediency, and also because I have no idea to know your level of networking skill, other than you understand the concept of segmenting a network by multi-homing your box.

Also, I am not sure HOW your ISP provides the PPPOE to you, and you do not mention anything else about it. If you actually have a "dsl router" or something along those lines, then you may not need need to multi-home a pc. MOST of the "dsl routers" being used by the major carriers have a configuration page where they can be used as the WAN/LAN interface, and all you have to do is set the mode and then uplink your switch to it (you said HUB, I'm assuming SWITCH. If it is a HUB, buy a SWITCH.)

For example, if it is one of the little Westell boxes, then they can be set up for multiple PCs within the config. I have one of those. I DO NOT use it for that, but the option is there. I actually have 2 separate firewalls and a router.

I honestly don't know of any ISP that require the user's PC to be used to control the PPPOE connection any more, simply because it is a configuration and troubleshooting NIGHTMARE for the ISP, as they have NO control over your PC.

So, double check what you have and if all else fails, RTFM or call your ISP.

Alternately, if you DO have to multihome and do not have a dsl modem, then you can always use ICS. I SERIOUSLY DOUBT that is the answer, but for the sake of expediency here are a couple of links that will get you running with ICS, the built in "routing" in XP Pro. Foregoing a 3rd party solution or other hardware, check the following links for using the built-in ICS in Windows XP. Note: I'm assuming you are using XP PRO and not Home. I do not think Home has this feature...

And, as boring as it is, they have at least started adding videos to their tutorials:

Hope that helps!
