I just purchased a HP Pavilion dv6000 notebook. I've been trying to get it to connect to the internet for three days now. I contacted my ISP (sympatico) and HP. I've done what was instructed to me by both and nothing has changed. When I select 'connect' it dials the number like a phone would and has a deadline type of noise before it rings and then say "Please hang up and try to call again, this is a recording." Yes, I have the jack in the right socket. I also get error message 678 saying that the remote computer is not responding. I have the right number because I can connect with my other computer (this one) which uses the same information I have on the notebook. Please tell me what is wrong! I'm so frustrated and I really don't want to have to return it. I need this laptop for school this year!

Re: New HP Pavilion dv6000 refuses to connect to internet through dial-up!
Ok, just a couple of ideas here, is your phone line touch-tone or rotary and is your modem set the same?
Has the modem worked in a different location? (could be your modem is not working) Verify as best as your ear can(modems usually have a speaker monitor), that you hear a dial tone, the digits are being dialed, if they are, you should hear a ringing followed by a modem "handshake" with the remote end. Another idea, use a phone to listen to what happens when your modem tries to connect, do you hear dialing? do you hear a ring? Last option, use the phone to dial the nr, and make sure youre dialing the correct nr, does it ring, and do you hear a modem answer? Make sure you didnt forget to put any required digit to get to an outside line, and that sometimes after the "9" you need a comma for a pause. |

It works with this computer but when I try my laptop here it doesn't work, nor in my other two phone jacks. It dials, rings, then gives the message "Please hang up and try to call again, this is a recording." When I call the number I get the screeching sound of a modem so I have the right number. |

Re: New HP Pavilion dv6000 refuses to connect to internet through dial-up!
Verify thru control panel the network connection, and on phone and modem settings you can choose tone or pulse dialing.
Do a stare and compare with the other computers. Also verify that it has a dial up modem, and youre using the dial modem jack on the computer. It is NOT the same jack you use for broadband. Last edited by rosiesdad; 08-24-2008 at 08:00 PM. |
