Internet Connection dies on startup

Not sure what the problem is, I'm also having issues with windows restarting and shutting down. (It won't do it from the commands, has to be done by holding down the power button.)

Background: Dell XPS, WinXP, Dell 1450 wireless adapter.

First noticed it when I tried to hibernate the computer yesterday and it showed the 'preparing to hibernate' message and just froze there.

So I restarted manually and then when it came back up, the internet wouldn't work anymore. The lights on the wireless adapter are still lit, so I know it's not dead, and it says it's connected when I first startup, but by the time it finishes loading everything, it has a red x through it and it won't come back up.

Also, when I right click and hit repair on the wireless connection, the message comes up like it usually would, saying 'disconnecting wireless connection' or something along those lines, but then it freezes there, and when I hit cancel, nothing happens. The box won't cancel out.

Then I tried to restart, and it goes to the bluish screen saying windows is shutting down, then it just stays there... same thing if I try to shut down completely. It seems that nothing works except manually holding the power button down.

I have no idea what's going on. Virus maybe? I have AVG and scanned it yesterday and got nothing. But now I can't download any others to try either.
