I recently had to reinstall Windows XP to my computer. I have been able to get most of my setting back to what they need to be, but I am having trouble with the wireless internet. The light on the "WAN" (?) doesn't come on, even though the computer says that it is enabled. If I tell the computer to search for wireless networks in range, I get the one that I TRIED to set up earlier, but no others. I can connect to that one, but only for a minute or so. Also, I'm not sure I am really connected, because if I unplug the ethernet cable it doesn't work, but it SAYS connected. I have tried to download drivers, I have tried all the settings and configurations that I could think of, I have tried setting up various types of connections, but I am at my wits end. I have an HP pavilion dv4000, running Windows XP professional. I really need to get this working, since I am taking summer classes and they go so quickly that I am getting REALLY behind while I try to get my computer fixed. Please, someone give me something else to try.
Thanks, Libby |

Re: wireless "thing" not searching for networks
Hi Libby. Are you saying you can connect to the router via an ethernet cable but not with a wireless adapter?

Re: wireless "thing" not searching for networks
Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.
What country are you located in. Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider). What is the expected Upstream/Downstream speed for your ISP Connection? Make and exact model of the broadband modem. Make and exact model and hardware version of the router (if a separate unit). Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device. Connection type, wired or wireless. If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2) Make and model of your computer. Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP-Home (or XP-Pro), SP1-SP2, Vista, etc. The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc. Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages. If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms? Have you disabled all encryption on the router to see if you can connect that way? If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally? On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this: Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt: Type the following commands: PING 206.190.60.37 PING yahoo.com NBTSTAT -n IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

I called Time Warner Cable and they said they couldn't give me any information, we had a big "stink" about it. Make and model of your computer. -- HP pavilion dv4000 Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines -- Windows XP office professional The Internet Browser in use -- have internet explorer and Mozilla Firefox, but I prefer Firefox I hope this offers some assistance. I am so frustrated with this machine that I am considering getting a new computer. I'm just trying to finish out these summer classes first because I can't be without a computer during them. Give me your opinion please, the machine I am looking at is a G3 apple ibook express. It is single processor, 700 mgHz, 20 GB hard drive, 12 in monitor, it is running mac OS x 10.4. One concern I have is that the main drive is a CD-Rom. Would that really limit me? Not having a DVD or a CD-RW? Thanks for all your help. I am soooooo glad that I found this forum. You guys are the BEST! Libby |

Re: wireless "thing" not searching for networks
yes, I'm plugged into ethernet right now. I can sometimes connect for a minute or so after I unplug the ethernet cable, but it never stays connected for long. Also, the light that is supposed to signify that the WAN is accessing wireless networks never comes on. Perhaps the light is just broken. I don't know. I'm thinking of just getting a new computer all together. I am constantly struggling with this one. It is SOOOOOO frustrating.
What's your opinion on this: G3 apple ibook express, 700 mgHz, 20 GB harddrive, single core processor. The only problem that I really see is that the main drive is CD-ROM. Would that significantly limit me? Thanks, Libby |
