Can't connect to cable, only DSL

I have a new Dell Latitude, able to still get Win XP on it. It connected fine to Suddenlink cable with wireless Linksys router. However it couldn't connect wired via the modem alone....ipconfig was a 165, not 192. Ignored it since it worked great wireless. Well now it won't connect either way.

Suddenlink claims it is a Microsoft problem due to recent Win update, but I don't have Zone Alarm which had that problem. I tried turning off the MS firewall, unloading Norton, and unloading Counter Spy, no effect. I can take it to an Embarq DSL connection site and it works wired and wireless. Old Dell still connects on the Suddenlink cable so that equipment is fine. Suddenlink can ping their modem, I can't ping out.

It seems like there is something preventing the new Dell from getting an IP from Suddenlink. Oh, I also tried "restore" going back a week, and no better. I know this sounds odd, but any suggestions other than canning cable and getting dsl for that site?

Did you turn off the modem for 30 seconds or more? That's mandatory when you change the attached device.

Yes, when my internet connections have a problem, I always turn off the modem and router to reboot, and reboot the computer.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
