AT&T EDGE and Online Games?

I have been one of the unlucky ones, stuck on dial up for my entire life. Well, now finally it seems that where I live is able to get a service by AT&T called "EDGE". I haven't decided the exact device, but I'm thinking of getting the AT&T USBConnect 881.

My first question, is this EDGE network decent? I was very dissapointed when I tried out satellite and found it impossible to get under 900 ms, thus making dial up a better choice to play the game with. I play World of Warcraft (I know, eww), and some one said that it disconnects in 25 or 40 man dungeons. Is this true, as well? I hope someone who has used, or is using, this type of internet can help!

My second, will I be able to play for prolonged periods? I heard some people saying games will "drain the battery" on the USB or something?

I would appreciate any feedback on this ASAP, if I can get high-speed I'll probably scream like a little school girl!

Re: AT&T EDGE and Online Games?

edge is very slow and access is limited for games - you will get knocked off line. If you have been watching the news lately, that is why so many iphone users wanted the new iphone since it uses the 3g network instead of edge network.

I have the old iphone also so I know from experience how slow the edge network is.

I keep hearing not-so-decent remarks about this service, thanks fo your input. Does anyone have any other comments on it?

Re: AT&T EDGE and Online Games?

try AT&T DSL service and ask the sales department what is the highest speed they have.. this will prevent your internet connection to drop while playing online games..
Also, before playing or installing any games consider checking the requirements of the games (PC memory.. etc..)
remember that it is not only the internet provider's fault that you drop connection whenever your playing online games, some computer aspects should also be considered.

Re: AT&T EDGE and Online Games?

It amazes me that people respond when they have no idea what they are talking about.

I play World of Warcraft, Guild Wars, and Everquest on the Edge Network.

I have been stuck with dial-up my whole life as well, so decided to try this as an alternative, at least hoping for super dial-up speeds if anything.

Download speeds on files: 20-30kbps
Upload: 5-10kbps :(

Latency in all games ranges from 300-600ms

I have had my connection stay on as long as 36 hours before having to restart my pc and/or the device.

I run anything up to 5 Man instances in WoW just fine, the highest pings come in Orgrimmar, with other people and the AH. But people respond to my chat quickly and follow me around with little delay even at 650ms.

Summary: Best alternative for dial-up only areas with crappy phone lines. I play my games with not any noticable lag, and it doesn't spike either (not consistently anyways). Granted, coming off broadband to this method you WILL see the difference, but after 1-2 weeks gameplay with this setup, you will be just fine.

Im happy with it. Satellite will not work for online gaming, period. Has to send a signal 30,000 feet above the freakin' earth, then back down again, created HUGE delays and BIG pings.

Hope this helps.
