Agere Systems AC'97 modem won't connect to internet, "port already in use"

Okay so I moved out to a wonderful land that only offers dial-up internet service so I had to get new modems for all my computers except the laptop I'm using now, which actually is not mine.
MY laptop, however was neglected in this, and now that I'm trying to connect, I find that I can't.
This laptop has an Agere Systems AC'97 modem, and each time I try to connect it tells me that the port is already in use. Honestly I don't know a thing about ports, but when i checked the device manager, I only saw something about a printer port. Enabled or disabled, it still won't connect.
I also tried to run a diagnostic on the modem, but I think the computer won't communicate with it.

I'm thinking I just need to get an external modem or something, but it still bothers me that this modem seems completely out of order, and I don't know if I'll still have problems with it later on.

I actually don't know what to ask, but does anyone have some suggestions?
