DHCP by Westell 327W router
I have DSL from Verizon with a Westell model 327W wireless router,
and several computers, including a Fedora 9 Linux and a Solaris machine, and several Windows machines. I want the Windows machines to be able to use the CUPS printer driver on the Fedora machine, but I don't know how to get the hostnames set. That is, though my fedora machine knows its hostname, the router doesn't think so, and I don't know how to set the router to recognize MAC addresses and then set hostnames appropriately, so that the PCs can send a file to the fedora cups service. The router does know the MAC addresses of machines which are up and I once managed to enter hostnames for some of these, but don't remember how. |

Re: DHCP by Westell 327W router
You should not have to do anything to the router to network, it doesn't need to know about host names. You also should disable any MAC filtering on the router, which may be part of your problem.

Re: DHCP by Westell 327W router
Johnwill said "You should not have to do anything to the router to network, it doesn't need to know about host names." But then how can one of my local machines (eg a Windows machine that wants to print) be able to find another local machine (eg the Linux machine that acts as printserver).
If the router assigned fixed IP addresses, I could set up the print driver to that address, but it doesn't, and if I set it up with the hostname of the Linux machine, the PC won't be able to get the job where it has to go. Am I misunderstanding something? PS: I'm a nubie. What do Digg, Furl, and Reddit mean? |
