Please Help! Ethernet problem
Dear all
I'm pulling my hair out! Please help! I've just changed my hard drive an dhave reinstalled windows XP. I haven't loaded anything else on except drivers for the graphics card etc. However, the PC will not recognise the ethernet cable linked to my Netgear router and i can therefore not access the internet. The router itself does work and allows me access via wireless to a laptop and ethernet to my xbox 360. Its just the ethernet connection to the pc which although did previously work, does not since installing the new hard drive. Please could someone help me out? Many thanks Alan |

Re: Please Help! Ethernet problem
Have you checked the system settings to see that the computer can still see the LAN card properly? You may need to install drivers for it.
If it is reading it fine does the LAN status in the system tray say its unplugged? |

Re: Please Help! Ethernet problem

That could be the problem - it doesn't say anything about network cable is unplugged. I'mnot technical at all, please could you let me know how to get the drivers? I don't have any discs related to the motherboard Really appreciate your help |

Re: Please Help! Ethernet problem
OK because at this stage its hard to tell exactly what is wrong we will start from the start.
The first step to take is determining if the network card (NIC) is operational. Open control panel and double click the system icon. Open the hardware tab then click "Device Manager". In this list there should be a network adapters section. If you expand it you should be able to see the type of network card you have. If there is one and it has no yellow"!" or red"x": Make sure the ethernet cable is plugged in, open "Network Connections" which can be found in control panel. Under the LAN or high-speed internet you should be able to see a local area connection symbol and it will say if its connected or not. If there was no device listed in the network adapters section then you will need to install it. Let me know whats happened up until this point and we can move on to the next step. |

Re: Please Help! Ethernet problem
Hi there
and thanks again for your support!! Unfortunately there appears to be a different problem with the pc at the moment, so i can't check as you requested. The system now loads until the loading windows xp screen, after this although the pc is clearly still doing 'its stuff', the monitor goes blank and says no signal. Aaaaarrgh!! |
