WRT54G Can't Hold a Connection

My WRT54G is connected via ethernet to a desktop, and I have a wireless laptop. As long as the desktop is off, the laptop works wonderfully with the router. The desktop, however, seems to have a tendency to cause the connection to drop. This happens about 5 minutes after getting on the internet, sometimes less, rarely more. When it causes the connection to drop, neither computer can connect anymore, and neither can even connect to the router settings page.

Firmware is the latest version, and I called Linksys, who had me change the MTU, among a couple other things, none of which really fixed the problem.

Any idea whats going on here?

Re: WRT54G Can't Hold a Connection

Some things you can try here.
  1. For wireless connections, change the channel on the router, I like channels 1, 6, and 11 in the US.
  2. Update the firmware to the latest version available on the manufacturer's site.
  3. Reset the router to factory defaults and reconfigure.

Many times these measures will resolve a lot of intermittent issues.

Done, done, and done. I've been trying to figure this thing out for about a week now, but I have limited knowledge of how the internet/networking works.

Disable any P2P applications on the machines, they're a common cause of this kind of issue.

Re: WRT54G Can't Hold a Connection

Sorry for the ignorance, I'm assuming you're talking about limewire, etc? I've got none of those on either computer. In fact the macbook is basically new seeing as how my hard drive got toasted two days ago and is now running off an external drive that I am using as a temp until my new drive comes
