Switched to DSL, nuked system?
I used to have cable Internet, but I recently had to switch due to bandwidth limitations from my old ISP.
I was pretty much forced to go with AT&T, and discovered a new level of suck with their customer service, but that is another rant entirely. I tried using the install CD, and reached the point where I registered a user name, and then produced an error saying that it could not access the servers necessary to register it. Yet for some reason, the actual DSL network registered it, because after another call to customer support, I entered my new name and password and was finally on the net. This led me to the actual problem. When I try to start up the net, it takes FOREVER to log in. With cable, it took 2 or 3 seconds to load in google (as my homepage) from firefox being off. Now it suddenly takes around 20 seconds to get started. Then, you will get the feeling that it is actually loading. Sometimes it will load very quickly, other times it will load so slowly that it reminds me of the old dial-up days. There seems to be little consistency in regards to this speed. Other times, I get a message that my internet connection does not seem to be working, but if I refresh, it may or may not load in. I tried this in IE and FF. Same results. Windows Update site will not properly connect, and I have checked all sorts of settings, researching things on Google. My computer is still running horribly. I have used CCleaner, Ad-Aware, Spy-Bot and a virus scan from Avast! Avast found 2 instances of a piece of adware when I tried installing from the CD. I believe I got all that scrubbed off. No change. I did reboots, repowers, resets and all sorts of other standard (unplug it and plug it back in) type stuff. Somewhere along the line, I got a bizzare error from Firefox where it would say that it was running, but was not displaying. I eventually ran it in safe mode, and it fixed. That was a nice Twilight Zone Error. During all this, I ran a repair install from my Windows disk, wondering if some DLL's got messed up. I am at my wit's end, and can't figure out what the origin of this error is, or how to fix it. AT&T DSL Support is just a bunch of idiots reading from a screen for the most part. However, running the net like this is simply unacceptable. Specs~~ CPU: AMD 64 3700+ RAM: 2gb DDR1 (PC3200) Hard Drive: 2 sata2 RAID drives in mirror configuration. 360gb GPU: ATI Radeon X1900XT Browser: Firefox (all test ran with IE as well) DSL: Motorola (no identifiers noted. Little silver box about the size of your hand) DSL Lights: {Power} {Ethernet} {DSL} {Internet} {Activity}. All lights are green except activity, which blinks regularly. Ethernet light will occassionally blink when pages are loading and such. |

Re: Switched to DSL, nuked system?
I'd run a few of there over the course of a day at different times, then post a link to the results pages.
Register at DSLReports and run their Line Quality Tests. It's best to run this test with a direct wired connection to eliminate any wireless issues from the results. It's useful many times to run this test several times, and we'd like to see each of the results. Post the results link from the top of the test display page for each test run here. The link to post is near the top of the page and looks like: If you wish to post this result to a forum, please copy/paste this URL http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2357195 <- sample only, yours will obviously be different! and your IP will be disguised. Copy/paste that link here. Note: You will have to enable PING (ICMP) request response either in your router (if you have one), or in your computer's firewall for direct modem connections. This is very important to get the most important part of the test to run.

Re: Switched to DSL, nuked system?
I am trying to set up my system to be pingable. The strange thing is that although I have some higher than average understanding of how things like this work, I cannot get it to be pingable. I followed all the instructions, the firewalls are off. I can't figure out why it is still unpingable.
I am going to run the test anyways and post the results on here. I am also going to edit the "technicians report" that can come right from the modem. I will edit it to make sure it is secure, and post that as well. Meanwhile, I got to wait for the que to allow me in. |

Re: Switched to DSL, nuked system?
Well, I waited forever and a day, and nothing ever happened with that test. I tried every suggestion and technique to allow it to ping my system, with no success.
Therefore, I am going to post a copy of the tech report, with certain areas censored, of course. 1 Manufacturer Motorola, Inc. 2 Vendor ID 001d6b 3 Model Number 2210-02 4 Friendly Name Motorola Netopia 2210-02 ADSL Modem 5 Model Description Single Port Ethernet Modem 6 Model Name 2210-02 7 Serial Number 34409844 8 Hardware Version 1.0 9 Model DSL Firmware Version DSP 7.2.3.0, HAL 7.2.1.0 10 Model Software Version 7.7.3r5 11 Hardware Options 12 Software Options 13 Modem Configured true 14 Time Since Last Boot 000 days 06:44:22 15 Current Time 2008/05/10 22:40:07 GMT 16 Time Servers 68.94.156.17 68.94.157.2 ntp1.sbcglobal.net ntp2.sbcglobal.net 17 First Time Use 2007/10/17 18:47:50 GMT 30 Modem Health Status ok 31 DSL Link Status up 32 Time Since Last Sync 000 days 06:36:41 33 Loss of Signal false 34 Loss of Framing false 35 ATM Cell Delineation true 36 Internet Status up 37 Ethernet Link Status up 38 PPP Connection Status connected 39 PPP Last Connection Error none 40 PPP Uptime 000 days 06:36:38 50 Test ADSL Line Sync pass 51 Test ATM Cell Delineation pass 52 Test ATM Signal pass 53 Test ATM OAM Segment Ping pass 54 Test ATM OAM End to End Ping pass 55 Test DSL Ethernet to ATM pass 56 Test LAN Ethernet Connection pass 57 Test Mac Bridge to LAN Ethernet pass 60 Test PPPoE to Ethernet pass 61 Test PPP to PPPoE pass 62 Test PPPoE Server Connect pass 63 Test PPPoE Server Session pass 64 Test Authentication with PPP server pass 65 Test IP to WAN pass 66 Test IP to LAN Ethernet pass 68 Test IP to PPP pass 69 Test Validate WAN IP address pass 70 Test Gateway Ping pass 71 Test DNS Well Known Host Query pass 72 Test Primary DNS Ping pass 73 Test Secondary DNS Ping pass 74 Test Mail Srvr 1 Ping skipped 75 Test Mail Srvr 2 Ping skipped 76 Test News Srvr 1 Ping skipped 77 Test News Srvr 2 Ping skipped 78 Test Web Portal 1 Ping skipped 79 Test Web Portal 2 Ping skipped 80 Test PPPoE Connect to Gateway pass 90 Active VCs provisioned 1 91 DSLAM Vendor Id 00000000 () 92 DSL Line Mode DMT 93 DSL Training Mode multimode 94 Conf VPI 0 95 Conf VCI 35 96 Conf PVC Search List 0/35, 8/35, 0/43, 0/51, 0/59, 8/43, 8/51, 8/59 97 VPI 0 98 VCI 35 99 VC Encapsulation LLC 100 DSL Line Type Fast 101 DSL Line Interleaved Depth 1 110 Default Device Enabled true 111 Default Device Mac Address 00:00:00:00:00:00 112 Default Device IP Address 75.39.135.172 113 Default Device Address Type public 114 Service Provider Name 115 Service Provider Phone 116 Service Provider URL 117 Service Provider Help URL 118 Modem MAC Address 00:1d:6b:0d:0d:74 119 LAN DHCP Server Enabled true 120 DHCP Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 121 DHCP Start IP Address 192.168.1.64 122 DHCP End IP Address 192.168.1.64 123 DHCP Default Gateway 192.168.1.254 124 DHCP Default Lease Time 000 days 00:10:00 125 Domain name 126 DHCP Leases Allocated 1 127 DHCP Leases Available 0 Rx Tx 140 Current Rate 3008 512 141 Previous Rate 0 0 142 DSL Max Rate - Re: Switched to DSL, nuked system?
Nothing? Strange, by the way you acted, I assumed that there would be some things in there that would at least mean something to you. Oh well.
I still can't get any of the test that you directed me to to work. I am wondering if my "refurbished" modem is messed up. How could I find out if it is a defective modem or not? |

Re: Switched to DSL, nuked system?
You need to enable PING (ICMP requests) in the router, not in Windows. Your "modem" is a modem/router, that's where the pings are being blocked.

Re: Switched to DSL, nuked system?
Alright. How do I change that? I got an IP number that will allow me to access the modem. However, there are very few options I can change. Most of these are beyond my current understanding, and I leave alone for the most part.
I will be posting some screen caps later of all I got. I have to censor a few areas and find hosting somewhere. I talked to the ATT tech support department yesterday, and he eventually said the only thing they were trained in was helping you change your user name and password on the modem itself. He then proceeded to tell me that my problem was with my computer. I think that strange, as the day before it was hooked up, that I was on my cable Internet, which had no problems. I wonder if the problem is in my DSL itself though. It is a refurbished model, and this thing does get pretty warm as it is. |

Re: Switched to DSL, nuked system?
Hard to say where it is, that's one reason I want to see the line quality report.
