Random Time Outs and Problems Connecting to Certain Websites
Hi.
I have an ntl/virgin 10M modem connection, connected to a NetGear RT311 Router. The signal seems good, and the modem is relatively new. On my main PC however, I have had an ongoing problem with random timeouts. Using Firefox, certain websites, (especially Facebook) will hang up on me for long periods of time. In order to repair my connection, I am forced to completely reset the connection through the router. A few days ago, I tried installing ProxyWay in order to generate different IP's / Proxy settings. The software was inneffective so I uninstalled it. I also installed XP SP3. Since then I have had serious connection issues. I have been pinging my gateway www.ntlworld.com. I'm probably getting on average 1 ping loss in 6, in random order. My connection is also becoming completely intermittant and laggy. I am currently using another PC and the ping and connection seem fine. It seems therefore that the issue is either ProxyWay settings, or something to do with SP3. Any help on how to resolve this, or ideas about the random website connectivity issues would be most useful. Thanks! |

I'd uninstall SP3 and do a system restore to before you installed the problem applications.

Re: Random Time Outs and Problems Connecting to Certain Websites
Hey. System restore is definately a no go for me. Firstly, I turn it off, and secondly, I'd never trust a restored system. I'd rather spend the day completely reformatting the system and being assured that I had a decent OS.
To be honest. I think it's my crappy cheapo virgin modem. Apparently I should be getting a 10MB connection, but no, i'm getting about 0.2MB. Also, there's a definate burning smell coming from my modem. Does anyone have any cunning ideas about purchasing a decent modem and using it to spoof a trusted ntl/virgin mac address? |

Well, time to completely format.
I think it's foolish to discount System Restore, it saves the day many times. I also don't know why you have such mistrust in it, it's worked for millions of users.

Re: Random Time Outs and Problems Connecting to Certain Websites
microsoft is still running thu Bugs with Sp3 so i'd restore to prev date and w8 till the fully operation version comes out, i work for that perticular Isp so i gess u have a Cable connection, as adsl is only up 8mbps
try start ~ run ~ cmd ~ ipconfig /flushdns start ~ run ~ cmd ~ ipconfig /realse start ~ run ~ cmd ~ ipconfig /renue see if that helps, as well i'd clear the cash on the pc and do a disk defrag any further problems contact Virgin they will giv u a chk list of things to do but , the best option is those 3 commands above ... hope it helps |
