DSL Hanging after fresh install
Greetings all. I blew my system away a few weeks ago and now my DSL connection keeps hanging. XP Pro, SpeedStream 5200. How long the connection lasts is very inconsistent, sometimes for a few days, sometimes for an hour. If you double click the connection icon, or click the network icon to look at the properties of the connection, the window flashes quickly then is gone. It appears that I'm connected - I'm not.
This behaviour only started after the fresh install onto a new hard drive. I've changed NICs. Changed routers. Went directly into the modem. Nothing worked. Any ideas would be most appreciated. |

Re: DSL Hanging after fresh install
Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.
What country are you located in. Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider). What is the expected Upstream/Downstream speed for your ISP Connection? Make and exact model of the broadband modem. Make and exact model of the router (if a separate unit). Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device. Connection type, wired or wireless. If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2) Make and model of your computer. Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP-Home (or XP-Pro), SP1-SP2, Vista, etc. The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc. Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages. If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms? If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally? On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this: Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt: Type the following commands: PING 216.109.112.135 PING yahoo.com NBTSTAT -n IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: DSL Hanging after fresh install
You have full Internet connectivity, so I think this issue is a browser issue. You can ping sites by IP address and URL.
Have you disabled ALL firewall applications?

Re: DSL Hanging after fresh install
Not a browser issue. Email also stops working. The "connection" freezes. You can't disconnect. You can't reconnect. I can only reboot.
No firewall. But you got me thinking - the only difference between my old system and the new install is the virus/spyware software. I installed CA and have been using it. Could this create a problem? Virus software? |

Re: DSL Hanging after fresh install
Any installed application can be the issue. What happens if you boot in Safe Mode with Networking, does it work properly that way?

Re: DSL Hanging after fresh install
Well, it's been working for the last two days now. No hangs. But it will. That's why this is a problem to diagnose. Stays working for two days then it starts acting up. I try things thinking I have the issue fixed cause it stays working for days - then it starts hanging again.
I can't use the computer is safe mode with networking. It's useless to me and it may take days running it that way to find the issue. I'll try it after the next hang up though. Thanks a lot for the postings. Most appreciated. Stupid computers...........;-) |
