help: weird problems with 2Wire and internet access

Hello, recently our 2Wire router started showing the red error light for the broadband access. We thought it had something to do with the physical phone line in the house, but then we tried to hook up an identical 2Wire router that we had in the old router's place. Now, we get the local connection and it says it's got the connection to broadband, but I still cannot access the internet from the main computer hooked up to it, nor can I access the internet from any of the laptops on the network. Can anyone help with this? Is there any other specific info that would be needed to diagnose this problem? We did use our SBC CD to reinstall the router to no avail......

Thanks so much!

The red error light indicates that router is probably defective.

For the new router, you may have to configure the WAN section of the router with the proper account details. Connect to the old one and check the WAN page, duplicate the settings in the new router.

Re: help: weird problems with 2Wire and internet access

Johnwill,
thanks for the advice. Dumb question coming up in 2 seconds....where do I find the WAN settings for the old router? And where do I then change these settings? I mean, we put in the new WEP....

The WAN settings are typically on a WAN configuration page in the router's web based setup. I don't have access to one of those routers, but you can check the user's manual for the location.

Re: help: weird problems with 2Wire and internet access

OK, I've still got this problem. When I use the installation CD, there are no options to change anything...including WAN settings. When I look at the files in the 2wire folder I have no luck either.

also.....

Does the fact that I can ping yahoo.com in command prompt mean anything? Does this mean that I am definitley connected to the internet, but that some settings are just off?

Thanks

Re: help: weird problems with 2Wire and internet access

Yes, if you can ping yahoo.com it means the router is working. You obviously have internet connectivity! What are the indications when you try IE, what exactly happens?

First off, boot in Safe Mode with Networking and see if you can still ping yahoo.com, and also if IE connects in that mode.

Let's start with some more information.

Try these simple tests.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

IPCONFIG

PING <computer_IP_address>

PING <default_gateway_address>

PING 216.109.112.135

PING yahoo.com

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

<computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

I'd also like to see this:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands, one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.
