[SOLVED] New router, modem problem?

I have been having slow download speeds as far as I can remember. I have run line quality, speed etc. tests and all should be better than what it is. I download at 250kb/s when I should be going around 2Mb/s. I just got a new router incase that was the problem. Is there a chance it could be my modem? I am on Virgin Media and Telewest. My modem is a "Webstar". Any suggestions?

Re: New router, modem problem?

It could be the modem, and it could also be your ISP.

What does your Line Quality test look like?

Register at DSLReports and run their Line Quality Tests. Post the results link from the top of the test display page here.

The link to post is near the top of the page and looks like:

If you wish to post this result to a forum, please copy/paste this URL
http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2357195 <- sample only, yours will obviously be different!
and your IP will be disguised.

Copy/paste that link here.

Note: You will have to enable PING (ICMP) request response either in your router (if you have one), or in your computer's firewall for direct modem connections. This is very important to get the most important part of the test to run.

Re: New router, modem problem?

Well, there's nothing wrong there.

I re-read your original post, and I think you have a misconception of your download speeds.

2 megabits/sec is 250 kilobytes/sec, there are 8 bits in a byte. If you're downloading files at 250kbytes/sec, you are getting full speed.

Re: New router, modem problem?

Well at lot of the time I am downloading at about 300 kilobytes/sec. It usually starts off at like 1.7megabytes/sec then drops to like 900kilobytes/sec and down and down to about the 300 mark or 250.

Re: New router, modem problem?

The initial indicated speed means nothing, Again, if you have a 2mbit service and you're getting 250 kbytes/sec download, there's nothing wrong. I have a 15mbit service, and my downloads are around 1.8 mbytes/sec. 1.8 * 8 = 14.4, or just about the full bandwidth. That's as good as it gets.

Re: New router, modem problem?

Alrite, I think I'll try to pay some money to my parents for a better download speed.

Re: New router, modem problem?

That's probably the only solution, I think your connection is working fine.
