Newbie at Networking

i have a broadband cable connection and i want to be able to share it with other computers in my house. i figured going wireless is the easiest way. so before i buy anything i just wanted to know some details and/or advice. as of now i figure i need a wireless router and some wireless network cards. is that all i need? do i need a hub or setup a server?

Welcome to the board,

I'm afraid that I really don't know that much about wireless networks as I tend to avoid them due to security concerns ... but I'm sure someone will be along to give you the info. your looking for.

I can honestly say I am NOT an expert on wireless, but from my experience I don't suggest it if you can avoid it, and depending on what your going to do with it you may want to with it you may want to reconsider... but no you shouldn't need a server, and I don't think you'll need a hub either... I'm not sure on the hub though it would make sense that you wouldn't since there are no wires so it will all be free access, but you'd need something to determine the difference between computer G asking for data on a website and computer B asking for a download.... so I'm kinda unsure of this one... sorry....:(

You can purchase a wireless router, and the network cards and a hub or switch unless you plan on going completely wireless, in which case you can leave out the hub or switch :) If you go wireless... there are 2 standards 802.11a and 802.11b ... A is much faster, but more expensive.. b is slower but cheaper.. and both have WEP ... but its not enabled by default so I'd suggest you enable it.. As well as reading the manuals that come with your specific router to enable the wireless gateway/router to be as secure as you can make it without breaking your stuff that you're online for in the first place :) Good luck and if you need help .. let us know
