Internet & Telephone problem

Hi all,

I'm new to all this, so go easy on me! anyway i'll try to explain the problem as best i can.

There are 3 telephone points in my house; the main BT box is in the lounge with extensions in a bedroom and a dining room. I have just moved my PC from the bedroom to the dining room. My previous set-up was a standard phone in the lounge; the PC & Fax/telephone via ‘speedtouch’ micro-filter in the bedroom. The dining room telephone socket was, at this point, unoccupied.

When I moved my PC downstairs into the dining room, with exactly the same set-up and cable configuration as in the bedroom, I was quite pleased that the internet worked at the first time of asking, however I soon realised that when the broadband/modem was connected into the telephone socket, that the phone wouldn’t work, either incoming or outgoing from any of the telephone points. Each of the telephone points was tested, simply by plugging a phone into them and they all worked.

So, I now have the PC downstairs, which I have to connect to the telephone point each time I want to use the internet and unplug when finished, the fax/phone is still in the bedroom and the standard phone is in the lounge. All equipment to each telephone point is connected through a ADSL micro-filter, and I have also tried swapping the filters for a new one, all to no avail.

So to sum up, the situation is that to access the internet, I plug in the modem via the filter, but the phones won’t work, then when finished I have to unplug the internet connection to enable me to use the phone or receive calls.

Any help would be much appriciated

You obviously have a filter configuration issue. You do realize that the modem is NOT filtered, but ALL of the phones are, right?

hi John,

the modem is filtered through a 'speedtouch' filter, and the phones connected to the other sockets are also filtered, i even bought a new filter and swapped things around to see if it was a filter problem. am i missing something really basic?

Well, I don't know what a "speedtouch" filter is, but the DSL/ADSL line should run DIRECTLY to the modem with no filters, and ALL of the other equipment connected to the phone line should be filtered. Truthfully, in some cases, I've had to resort to the following measures to get DSL working here.

Purchase a DSL splitter and install it at the telco service entrance. Run a direct line from the DSL port on the splitter directly to the DSL modem. Connect all of the other phone instruments to the telephone output of the DSL splitter. All of the DSL analog side wiring should be CAT3 or better twisted pair from the telco service entrance to the DSL/ADSL modem. You can use one of the twisted pairs in CAT5 cable if you have that on hand.

This is as good as it gets for DSL installations, and will usually solve in-house wiring issues.
