Problems With Online Gaming

Hey Guys, Upon playing "Medieval 2:Total War" when I am connected, if I am not hosting a game, and there are more than two players in the game itself, then upon the game start-up it crashes and claims there is a connection error. Now, if I host a game I get no problems. Is this something to do with allowing outgoing connections or something along those lines? I'm using a BT Homehub so any advice would be appreciated.
