Internet connection dies after around 10 minutes!

Here's my probelm:

On booting XP I have around 10 minutes before my internet connection slows tothe point where the brouser shows error messages at not being able to load the page. My internet connection says it is still working, and repairing has no effect. I have to restart my computer to get it working again.

I am connected by wire to a 2wire 1800HG Gateway (also runs wireless) router along with three other people. They have no problem with their connetion, so i'm guessing it's on my computer.

I've asked a few people who know a little about computers, as I only really know the basics, but no luck so far.

Thank's for your help,
Phil

This screams malware to me.

When it's slowed down, open the properties of the connection in Network Connections and watch the packet count. Do this when you should have no Internet activity. It should be counting very slow or not at all. If it's counting quickly, it's something running on your machine that you are not in control of.

Sorry it took me a while to reply. I looked at the packet count, and it does slow down a lot to nearly nothing when the web page no longer connects. Each time I try to load a page, it goes up a little, but only for a second. Anything else I could try?

Re: Internet connection dies after around 10 minutes!

It would probably be a good idea to run several virus/spyware removers on your computer anyway, also you may want to perform a similar check on the other computers in your wireless network. Make sure that your signal strength to your router is good which it probably is. You may also need to periodically powercycle your modem and router (unplug the power, wait a few seconds, and plug them back in) when this phenomenon takes place. You shouldn't have to do this every 10 minutes however. Also, know that a common way for routers to go out is by dropping connections more often, if your router is very old, it may be time to get a new one (don't worry, you don't have to spend allot of money for a router that will work).
