Hey,

The bandwidth of a Residential DSL Line is about 1024 kbps (Kelo Bits Per Second). That means your maximum download spees is about 128 KB/s.

Best Regards,

There really is no 'average' speed. Most ISPs and DSL providers have different plans with different upload/download speeds (and prices).

The faster you get with DSL, the more you can expect to pay.

I would not go with anything below:

Less than 1024Kbps (~1Mbps) download speed. This will equal about 125k/s.
Less than 384Kbps upstream. This will equal to about 48k/s when you are uploading.
I would expect to pay anywhere from $40-50 USD for the above.

Anything else will just seem slow ;)

I would recommend checking out http://www.dslreports.com and you can even see what other people in your area are getting, as far as speeds. The site is full of very useful information and can greatly effect your choices in a DSL provider. :D

DSL is also affected by distance. The closer you are to the POP, the better.

dslreports.com can also give you an estimate of how close you are to your POP.

especially useful when you are moving and before your move you can see how close you are to a POP.
(I used it myself to make sure the place I was moving into was capable of getting DSL)
