[SOLVED] Have to reboot to dial-up on Modem

Hello all,

I am running Windows XP Pro, with dial-up modem, on a four year old Gateway 7200X (3.4 Gig processor with plenty of RAM). I have Norton Anti-Virus and a few free spyware programs installed, as well as paid for Webroot Spy Sweeper. I had to uninstall the free Zone Alarm firewall to install new NAV software, and now use Windows firewall. (suspect Norton just doesn't like the competion).

The Problem: To get on line, I have to reboot the computer, if I wait ten minutes after restarting, the modem attempts to connect (I hear it), then keeps on unsucessfully trying to get online, so I have to connect immediatly after reboot. This issue has been occuring over the past six months, it is static, not intermittant. I changed my ISP two months ago and the problem continues. The computer at the office, using the same ISP account does not have this problem.

A secondary issue, which may or not be related, yet occured about the same time, is that when I am online, and open any Office 2003 program, the office program freezes and is nonresponsive, it does respond after I log offline. I have run every spyware program, Norton Anti-virus software, and online Norton and Mcaffee Scans and they find no problems.

Some of the posts here have been close, but not the same problem, or no specific answer. Gateway Tech support was not helpful or aware of any issues.

Thanks in advance for any assistance for this annoyance.

Roc

Re: Have to reboot to dial-up on Modem

I suspect this is a more general issue, and not necessarily related directly to the modem.

Take a look at this SFC Tutorial and see if doing this repair helps the situation.

Re: Have to reboot to dial-up on Modem

Thanks Johnwill,

I looked at the SFC Tutorial and ran the scannow SFC. It ran, and when completed gave no information or other indication that it had finished, other than disappearing. It showed no problem with dll files.

I'll keep working at it.

Re: Have to reboot to dial-up on Modem

I have an internal modem, is there a technique to see if it is turned on? Or anyother suggestions?

Thanks, roc1313

Re: Have to reboot to dial-up on Modem

found this on google, but cannot find it on the site
[Build a PC - Build and configure a computer - The dial-up modem ...I have "solved" the problem by rebooting immediately before using the modem, .... You should not select the Require to connect option, which should be ...]

Re: Have to reboot to dial-up on Modem

Problem solved. I went through my ISP, very helpful, had me uncheck the 'show terminal window' in dial-up properties, and we changed the password on the ISP.

Thanks for all your assistance. Roc
