Speedtouch 530 dropping internet connection yet still downloads

Hi All,

I have a PC with XP installed which is connected through a NIC and wired to first a switch and then a Speedtouch 530 modem/router. We never turn the pc off and the hub/router are also always on. Occasionally we have a problem where suddenly the internet stops working.

1. I test the router through the webgui and it says that all connections are active apart from the internet connection.

2. I repair the network connection.

3. I release and renew the ipconfig IP address

4. I reset the router

5. I reset the hub

6. I uninstall the NIC, and reinstall it allowing a new IP address from DHCP

7. All of the time, my torrents continue to download whilst i have no actual internet connection. Data is being passed in and out of the NIC, yet PING fails.

8. The only way to reset this is to reboot the pc. This brings it back up immediately. I can't understand it, surely rebooting it is the same as releasing and renewing the IP address or reinstalling the NIC. Why would the reboot reset the connection but the other 1-7 points do nothing. Also why would the torrents continue when there is apparently no connection to the internet.

Help would be appreciated.

I suspect if you stop the P2P application you'll find that this issue stops occurring.
