usb to ethernet adapter

I need to upgrade my broadband connection to wireless. Imagine my surprise when I found that despite having windows xp, I apparently do not have an ethernet connection on my hard disk drive.

I have been informed I could get an adapter but these do not appear to be readily available on the high street given most PCs these days have a build in ethernet connection.

Dilemma is which adapter should I get? How do they vary? Will this impact the speed of the download and would I be better off purchasing a new PC!

Both wired and wireless PCI adapters are available in quantity from a variety of sources.
