I'm not sure if this belongs here, and apologies if it doesn't, but here goes.
I recently returned from college for the holidays, and since plugging my PC in back here at home I have noticed an extremely annoying problem. Approximately every two minutes, I experience severe lag that basically freezes what I'm doing for a few seconds. (It's most noticeable - and irritating- when I'm playing World of Warcraft) Between these "lagspikes," my connection is fine. Now, we purchased a home networking service or somesuch from our ISP that allows my brother and I to be online at the same time. Our DSL modem is plugged into a router, which our computers are plugged into. The router is in his room, so I've run a 25-foot ethernet cable to my computer. Trying to find the source of the problem, or at least eliminate a few things, I unplugged the router and temporarily configured things so that my computer was connected directly to the modem. The problem persisted. Since I experienced no problems at college, and had this same problem before I left for college, I doubt it's from my computer. My brother experiences similar problems. And yes, I've spoken with my ISP. They gave me some basic tech support advice that made me fairly certain they had no idea what the heck they were talking about. None of it helped. Anyone have any ideas about what could be wrong here? |

Re: "Lag" problem
Register at DSLReports and run their Line Quality Tests. Post a link to the results here.

Re: "Lag" problem
A small issue, but not too bad. I'd try running a couple more of them, just to see if at times it gets more ugly. I'd like to see them here too.
The host precedence violation is interesting, I've never seen that. The 83ms ping to the first hop is pretty bad too.

http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2326267 My problem persists...I've tried a few more things, and actually I have noticed something very strange; the other computers on the network don't seem to get the problem as bad as mine. In fact, if I use my laptop and connect to the wireless broadcast from my router, there seems to be no problem. This would seem to indicate there's a problem with my computer, but still...if that's the case, why did I not notice any problems while at college? |

Re: "Lag" problem
Hmm... The last one you ran shows excessive packet loss at your last hop. If this is not the ISP, then you have some issue on the machine.
