I'm using a linksys adapter (wusb54g v2.0) on a pc w/ XP to connect to a linksys router. This connection was working fine for months and suddenly the internet connection fails every couple minutes (but i can connect to the router). Signal strength to the router is good. I'm on channel 6.
I've searched through many posts and the causes of this problem range from malware, phone interferance, a neighbors new wireless network, channel #, incorrectly installed drivers, interfering windows updates, and other stuff that I dont' understand. I've used adaware, spybot, and mcaffee to clean up and I'm pretty sure everything is installed correctly (it was working for months!). I've tried restarting and repairing the connection. Anyone know the most common solution(s)? |

Re: Wacked Internet connection
Download and install the latest firmware from Linksys.
Reset the router to factory defaults and reconfigure. I'd also try a wired connection to eliminate non-wireless issues.

Re: Wacked Internet connection
I think my problems just got a little more serious; my internet explorer will not open and neither will my mcaffee software. Error messages pop up telling me that both programs need to close. And I had a surprise when, for a split second, the linksys program said I was connected to an 'ad hoc' network. The next second linksys said I was connected to my home network.
This is starting to worry me. Does this sound like a virus to anyone? |

Re: Wacked Internet connection
Well, it sure sounds like more than a simple networking issue!
Please follow this HJT Log 5 Step Process to post a HijackThis log in the HijackThis Log Help forum here.

Re: Wacked Internet connection
Thanks for your help-I think I'm on the right track. Things are getting stranger though! I uninstalled 'View Point Media Play' like Step 1 suggested. I also tried uninstalling 'Media Motor' and some remenant of 'Kazaa' but my computer thinks they no longer exist (and hopefully Kazaa doesn't b/c I haven't touched it for years).
Moving on to Step 2, I was getting very worried b/c IE wouldn't open and the Panda Active Scan requires it. But after a restart, McAfee unexpectedly installed an update and now McAfee is running. Soon after I was able to do the Panda Active Scan with IE. However, my internet connection has since failed so I can't view the results of the scan. Now I'm scanning with McAfee (now that it opens) and hoping it will find something. Thanks again for your help. Hopefully I can make progress through those 5 steps and actually post a log. |

Re: Wacked Internet connection
I spoke to soon. McAfee scan yielded nothing. I restarted again and its back to that old problem: IE & McAfee won't open b/c they experienced errors.
It will take a miracle to complete those steps with IE acting the way it is. Are there any other suggestions? |
