I, too, am having this problem. I am trying to help my father-in-law, who is on a mac with OS X, to set up his new dsl modem/account with Verizon. I have installed DSL previously and can do some basic troubleshooting. I spent time talking with tech support about this issue.

Basically, it seems that the issue is with the wall jack. I was able to get a solid DSL / Internet signal on the modem when I plugged it in to a wall jack in another room. But in the room where the computer is, I was unable to get that. There is a splitter on the jack. I tried switching out the splitter, changing the telephone cord used to connect the modem to the jack, and connecting directly with the jack (no splitter, with both phone cords), but to no avail. So the problem seems to be that the wall jack isn't getting the DSL signal.

Is there a way to fix that without paying Verizon to come out? At this point, I'm thinking to connect the modem at another wall jack, outside the room, then run a long network cable from that into the room to connect the computer.

Any thoughts, ideas, suggestion?

Purchase a DSL splitter and install it at the telco service entrance. Run a direct line from the DSL port on the splitter directly to the DSL modem. Connect all of the other phone instruments to the telephone output of the DSL splitter. All of the DSL analog side wiring should be CAT3 or better twisted pair from the telco service entrance to the DSL/ADSL modem. You can use one of the twisted pairs in CAT5 cable if you have that on hand.

This is as good as it gets for DSL installations, and will usually solve in-house wiring issues.

Thanks, johnwill, I really appreciate your help. I do have one question, though, about the DSL Wiring Upgrade Tutorial you linked to.

On page 3 your supposed to install a filter on the DSL signal coming in to the NID. I thought that the filter was used to filter OUT the DSL signal. So why am I supposed to add the filter to the DSL signal-carrying wires at point of entry? I just want to make sure I understand it and do this right.

They're doing something slightly different than I specified, they're using a plain filter to filter ALL the phone lines at the NID and running the DSL line direct from the NID around the filter. You can do that as well and not buy the DSL splitter, I just think the splitter is the superior solution.

The key here is all of the POTS equipment goes through a filter, and the DSL modem connects directly without the filter.
