Thumbs Down Verizon DSL Installation Issue

I am installing DSL for a neighbor who bought my old Compaq Armada 5500, which I later installed a full new install of Windows 2k Pro:

1.) During Verizon DSL installation CD progress, the checking system screen advised me that everything was good...except that I have Windows 2k installed and that the MSN software that comes with the Verizon DSL CD does not support this OS. Is this really true? How can MSN not support Windows 2k??

2) There was the option to continue without installing MSN, which of course I did. On screen which tests connection with Verizons server, I get the following:

- ***NT Authority Shutdown
- Shutting down windows due to "C:\WINNT\system32\lsass.exe unexplained termination.
-Windows then shuts down in 55 seconds

Helpful Info:

-I accomplished a full c:\format and fresh install of Win2kpro after having the PC lock up the first time I installed the Verizon DSL CD
-I opened up the "Task Manager" window to processes running to see the "lsass.exe" file shutdown and noticed that once the Westell Modem started communicating with Verizons server, the "lsass.exe" file started variying in size from an initial 450k to over 3500k and then as the network detection file would pop up in the system processes window, BAM....."lsass.exe" file would be terminated and windows would shut down.

Summary:

This is a very peculiar problem in the fact that I had my Verizon DSL CD installed on this same PC six months prior and had no problems running MSN on Windows2K pro......
***Note: My Verizon DSL Installation CD was Ver. 5.xx, the Cd I am using for my neighbor is Ver. 6.0 - don't know if that is the issue or not

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as my computer illiterat neighbor has had her service ready date of 9-28-04 come and pass and still no internet, she is about to give up on Verizon.

Thanks,

David

The issue you are describing, is more than likely an internet virus rather than an actual software issue. (msblaster, sasser, etc..)

You need to patch WIN2k. Install a firewall software (freeware type or buy one) Then go to windowsupdates to get the updates. If the shutdown message appears, click start, click run, Type: shutdown /a
or maybe shutdown -a.

Read more here:
http://www.f-secure.com/v-descs/sasser.shtml

FYI:
The computer can get the error message without being infected, but could also be infected.

Question Possible Sasser Worm Virus?

Hey Tent:

Thanks for the advice, I'll check that. But I need to ask you something? How could I have a virus if I did a complete HD format, fresh Install of OS and haven't been hooked up online yet? Is it in the boot sector or something that formatting doesn't take care of?

P.S. How do I apply the patches if I can't get online? Will that command you told me to type "shutdown /a take care of the problem for the interim while I apply the patch?

Thanks again,

David

To answer the online question:

Was the DSL modem plugged into a phone line? Is this an internal or external DSL modem?

If you were plugged into the usb/network port of the computer, and the modem does not have a built in router, you may have been connected to the internet without even installing the software if an internal modem was installed.

If this is not the case, then you may have other issues.

To get online, buy or borrow a router to plug into an external dsl modem. If it is internal, buy mcaffee or norton firewall and install it first. Most DSL modems only need a username and password and do not require software installation. The software is usually a customized browser and will automatically set up PPPoa if needed.

If you have the computer with a fresh install and does this without ever being plugged into the internet, then I would need more info.

My experience with broadband is:
You connect to the modem (which is external) then you are on the internet. If the modem does not have built in router, and you have 2000, or xp, and no firewall turned on, then BAM you could be infected by those viruses.

Grin Verizon DSL Installation Issue

IDTENT:

I believe you are correct, because the PC does not shut down with the "external DSL Modem" powered down.
I have my own purchased copy of Norton Internet Security 2004 Pro which I guess I could install on my neighbors PC, but I'm not sure if Norton permits that. When I go to register the product, if I just re-register it again do you think it will be a problem?
That is the only way I see I can get behind a firewall at the moment without buying something.
I copied the sasser anti-virus software unto a floppy so I can run it on the machine, the exe was small enough to fit on the floppy. I will run that, see what if finds, then install Norton and give it a shot.
I sure do appreciate your help and such awesome quick response too! Maybe I can return the favor sometime??

I'll let you know how it works out

David

I do not believe "sharing" a copy of norton is what I meant.

You can do a search for freeware or trialware firewalls. If you have a cd-burner you could go to the f-secure link above and download the MS patch for the virus. This would allow you to "patch" the system and get the windows updates that way.

You are on the right track. Really recommend the firewall through cd. You could also "restrict" the pc. Go to your Network connection. (USB or ethernet, LAN...) Click properties, then double click tcp properties. Click advanced, then Click the opions tab, then click tcp/ip filtering. Then check Enable. In the TCP/UDP add the ports 80,21,25,110 (You have to check the Permit only first).

After you update the machine, go and undo the filtering.

I have installed Verizon DSL at serveral work locations and help two friends install it also. I have to say the first thing I do with their install disc is place it in a nice place for storage, I do not use it to many problems. If you using externa DSL modem then the user name and password needs to be entered into the modem for connection verification. You do not need the software that is provided to get on the internet and most of the programs on them are redirects to some home page plus more. If you let use know what kind of modem it is then can help with setup. Have used Westell, Zoom, and Netgear for DSL but probably others familiar with other makes.
