usb will work but ethernet connection won't

Just to get this out of the way, I am as green as a Granny Smith. I have a dell 4700 pc w/ p4 processor running winxp sp2. For the last few years I've had a dial-up connection. I've just got a DSL connection through Bellsouth. With my self install kit I received a netopia modem. During the install, windows detected my ethernet port. It wont work. It just keeps saying that a network cable is unplugged. The modem will work with an usb cable though. Can somebody help me?

Re: usb will work but ethernet connection won't

Sounds like you need to install driver for the onboard ethernet.
Go to device manager, see if there are red or yellow flags next to
ethernet, or if its even there. It may be disabled in device manager.
Just enable it. Find your original motherboard setup disk/disks, find
the ethernet driver and install. You may have to check bios and make
sure that the onboard lan is enabled. Ethernet will be alot faster than
the usb connection.

Re: usb will work but ethernet connection won't

First off, are you SURE you have a good Ethernet cable?
  1. Turn off the modem and computer
  2. Disconnect the USB.
  3. Connect the Ethernet cable.
  4. Turn on the modem, wait for a steady data light.
  5. Boot the computer.

Please post this.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.
