There is no dial tone - Smart Link 56K Voice Modem
Hi,
I recently installed XP and a modem (the model listed in title) on a ladies computer, along with manually creating an internet connection. She was able to connect to the internet fine while I was there, but a week later, she called complaining that she was unable to connect, and kept receiving the classic "There is no dial tone" error. I went back to her house and got the same error trying to connect. I tested all the coords, lines, and sockets of the modem and they were all in working order. The modem's volume was enabled and set as high as it would go in the property page. Never-the-less, there was no dial tone playing from her speakers as there was the times that I had heard it successfully connect. The lady was neither experienced enough nor inclined to make any changes to hardware settings, nor could I see any when checking things out, except possibly that the modem was now using "COM3" (not sure if it was using this before). Checking COM1 and COM2 (there was no COM3 listed) in the device manager yielded that they were both being used by: Intel(R) 82801BA LPC Interface Controller 2440 Removing this device caused the mouse to stop working, and while I had the modem set to use COM2 now, it still provided no dial tone, and Windows XP quickly reinstalled the mouse and the Intel(R) LPC driver, associating it with COM1 and COM2 again. I tried installing COM3, but the machine does not support it. I am at a loss as to how to fix this problem asside from trying to simply reinstall the modem, which would be a waste of a 45 minute driving trip if it doesn't solve the problem. Any other solutions to this problem would be appreciated. Thanks — Dave |

Re: There is no dial tone - Smart Link 56K Voice Modem
I think the first mistake was fooling around with COM3, I doubt that was the issue.
I think I'd get everything else working, then start from scratch with the modem install. I'm sorry that I don't see any way to "guess" at what might be the solution without having the computer available for troubleshooting and looking at various indications. Perhaps you could take the computer to your place until you get it sorted out?
