Question on Routers and Modems
Is there such a unit thats a DSL Modem and a Wireless Router all in one? Rather then having two separate boxes sitting on the desk?
I have a DSL Modem I got from the phone company, then I added a D-Link wireless router set up to work wireless with my Mac Notebook, then hooked up 3 more desk top computers into the Router by hard wire. So the D-Link Router has been working great for a good long while with all this hooked into it, and the DSL Modem has been great the whole time. But I think the DSL Modem is going bad, so I wanted to replace it, but I have been looking and don't know what I'm looking at and was not sure if there was such a unit that was all in one DSL Modem & Wireless Router all in one unit, rather than having the two items sitting on the desk. Re: Question on Routers and Modems
Great!!! thank you very much! I was not able to find this unit, I was looking all over the place!
I hope there are a lot of reviews on it, I guess it should work with all the DSL providers, I have ATT/SBC... Would I need to call my ISP to give them any ID numbers off of it? or go on line to set up the new Modem/Router?? |

Re: Question on Routers and Modems
This time I want to buy a quality Wireless Router.
I hear a lot of people say they like Linksys over D-Link for a Router. But I haven't read a lot of material supporting why people say this other than their experiences, so that just might be enough to listen to. I'll read the reviews on them both to see if there is something going on with the D-Link Routers not lasting long. My D-Link Router of 2.5 years has gone bad, it's intermittently working. So I'm thinking, instead of fixing whats not broken I'll keep using my DSL Modem and just buy what went bad which was the Wireless Router, so I'll pass on that very nice unit that Jack.Sparrow was so kind to have found for me, it has the DSL Modem and Wireless Router all in one unit. I guess another plus in doing it that way would be I don't have to worry about a compatibility issues like people are saying I need to watch for cause I'll still have the same DSL modem.... thank you everybody, I'm going to try this and let you know how it worked out... Oh yeah! If you know of or have used them 2 in one units I'd like to know what one it was and how you liked it, and did your phone company issue that all in one DSL Modem and Wireless Router? thanks.... Re: Question on Routers and Modems
I recently upgraded my router as well. After doing lots of research, I decided that LINKSYS WRT54GL would be the best choice. It's received numerous awards. Also, it has plenty of positive reviews. Plus, it's been working perfectly.

Re: Question on Routers and Modems
Great, I'm going to go with a sure thing and get the same Router you are tosh9i....
Also to make note of was with my D-Link I was not able to set up the security feature so nobody else was able to get on line thru my Wireless Router. I followed the directions step by step, everything went well with setting it up, but the security feature did not work right, it locked me out as well as everybody else, so I was never able to figure it out. So my Internet signal was all ways open to others to use in the neighborhood.... :) I hope I don't have that problem with this Linksys It looks like my Mac should work with it because it makes a note about Mac security, plus my Mac I believe if I'm correct will not need a Wireless card because I think they have something like thast built into the motherboard, something like that?? not sure but with my new Mac Intel its all set up, I'm sure someone can help me learn more about that, thanks... Re: Question on Routers and Modems
Hey tosh9i...
Someone made note in the review on that Router you showed me that he wished it was the WHR-HP-G54 because it cheaper and get better range, so I'm yet to look at them both to see where are the differences, what do you think?? I ask then why did this guy wish it was the other and not just buy the other??? this is very odd?? unless I missed what he was saying... ? |

Re: Question on Routers and Modems
I read thru about 50 reviews on both units, the Buffalo looked to have problems with the stock Firmware, loading it, this and that, but everybody worked the problems and gave it a great rating, I don't understand why?
Then I looked at the linksys reviews, they were much better in the areas that I say were key. I just didn't care for the reviews on the Buffalo, the reviews on the Linksys did look a lot better. You really need to know your stuff to get the Buffalo, so I'm sticking with the Linksys. thanks for that forum, its showing some good info too. Now that I'm learning more about Wireless Routers and firmware I'm wondering if I can do something like reload firmware to my D-Link 524? Maybe my old D-Link need to be software reloaded??? See I don't know anything about this stuff... :) lol... for all I know it has nothing of the sort like the Linksys does with fireware.. |
