Adding New computer to my network/ Locks up

I 've added a new laptop to my home network (Verizon Dsl, Westall 2200 Modem, Linksys 4 Port Router) I have it all hooked to a HP Desktop (Win XP) connected to that is a HP Desktop (Win Xp) a Dell Laptop 1510 (Win XP) and now my new Dell Inspiron (Win XP), when the two Dells are on together the DSL locks up, if I shut every thing down and reboot and disconnect 1 dell it works fine, the only changes ( I've had this set up for 1 1/2 years) I made was adding the Inspiron..... any ideas?

Re: Adding New computer to my network/ Locks up

Is it the Westell modem or the router that locks up? What are the exact indications? Can you power cycle just the modem and get back on-line? How about just the router? Maybe a firmware upgrade for the router is in order. Finally, sometimes you can do a factory reset of the router and reconfigure to beat some sense into the rig.

Re: Adding New computer to my network/ Locks up

It is just the modem (or thats what it appears to be), the exact indications are when the 2 Dell Laptops are wired in the DSL light flashes as if DSL were down, No I can not power cycle the modem or router or both, it requires me to shut down one of the Dells and unplugg the ethernet cable.... I hope I've answered your questions suffiently???? Thanks for the firmware and factory reset options, thats on the agenda next.

Re: Adding New computer to my network/ Locks up

If the firmware upgrade and factory reset doesn't do it, I'm starting to think it may be some sort of electrical issue on the network between the two Dell laptops that causes the router issues.

I'm assuming both of these are connected with a wired connection. Have you tried them wirelessly? Do you have wireless capability?

Another test might be to find an Ethernet switch and stick it between the laptops and the router, which may isolate them from the router and change the symptoms. I've actually seen this issue a couple of times with some machines.
