Linksys Router Issue

Hey guys,

I was using a linksys BEFSR41 router for about 6 years problem free. Recently it started dropping the connection at random times and I have to reset the router and then the connection is back momentarily, but drops again until I restart my computer which brings it back for good (When i say for good i mean until it poops out again). I went and purchased a new Linksys WRT54G router, mainly cuz im broke at the moment and went for the cheapest one, and that had a beautiful connection, drop free, for about 3 days and then the internet light and activity light on my modem were off entirely. So i called my ISP and they said that it meant my modem was not detecting my router and it had nothing to send a signal to. I troubleshooted for a bit and eventually gave in and hooked up my old router again (started to have WoW withdrawals). The old router continued with the same problem so after a few days i figured i would try the new router once again. I hooked up the new router and guess what....Beautiful connection again for 2-3 days and the same problem again where the router stops being detected by everything. Any ideas on what might be causing this?

Re: Linksys Router Issue

You had no internet light on your modem and the ISP blamed your router?

Re: Linksys Router Issue

Internet light and Activity light both were off completely. Its a DSL modem Speedstream 5100. And ya the DSL company told me That "my modem was not detecting my router and it had nothing to send a signal to."

Re: Linksys Router Issue

I am not a DSL expert for sure but that sounds odd to me. Someone else here might be able to be more specific.

I was able to find this...
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/8721

I would compare your lights to this chart when your connection drops again.
Possibly your modem is in bridge mode and your router is dropping the PPPoE??

can someone with more DSL experience elaborate on this?

Re: Linksys Router Issue

Connect directly to the modem, if you get a solid connection, then you need to determine why the router won't connect.

While connected to the router, then AGAIN when connected directly to the modem, please do this.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Linksys Router Issue

if your modem is securely connected to the phone jack that is carrying the dsl signal
then it doesnt matter if the modem recognizes the router
the modem modulates / demodulates the signal from the DSLAM to the com/router whatever
if you do not have the internet/dsl sync/ready light lit on your modem...
then you do not have sufficent connection with your isp
it has nothing to do with the router....
even if the modem is in bridge mode it still modulate/demodulates the signal from the provider

Re: Linksys Router Issue

The above, is with the new router i bought that drops the connection about every 3 days. It has followed that pattern 4 times now, but it works excellent up until it drops it.

Re: Linksys Router Issue

I hope I'm not stating the obvious, but having recently experienced something similar with a client, the culprit turned out to be a flaky connection, I mean a wire in the phone jack. It was the intermittent nature that frustrated us both. In this case it was a physical wire with oxidation.

Cheers.

Re: Linksys Router Issue

You've tried two routers, and both have the same issue. Time to replace the modem and/or the ISP.

Re: Linksys Router Issue

Guess its time to give my ISP a call and talk them into letting me have a new modem. Looking forward to that XD

Thank you for all the feedback everyone.
