Sharing a Cable Modem between two computers
Hello I will be going to my friends house in two days and he has a cable modem I have a network card for my computer and a cat5 cable to go to his modem but when i tried to surf the net after I connected the cable and network card to his computer and mine I still couldn't do it and what I am thinking is that I need to first have the driver for his modem that he has installed on my computer and set up a tcp/ip connection or whatever it is called and I will tell you what he has for a modem model it is a toshiba pcx1100u and if you could tell me in terms that I can understand that would be greatly appreciated how to get my laptop with win98se to work side by side with my friends computer so that we can both use the same modem at one time that is all thanks for your time

Basically... you are paying for a service. In an attempt to make a profit, they only give this service to the people who they get money from...IE you... so they need to keep track of everyone they are distributing access to, so if you have more than one network card which you do, you need to let them know so they can adjust their service accordingly :)
In a nutshell: Go tell them you are networking your computers through a hub, and the'll ask you for the addresses of the cards and you'll probably be set :D

nope............not at all.
You just let the cable company know that you have 2 pc's hooked up through a hub and you need 2 ip addresses (which will only cost you an extra $4 a month) and you set everything in your TCP/IP to Auto ( they will also walk you through setting up any numbers in your TCP/IP for you) and your set. It is well worth the $4 a month to do it the right way. I frown on Pirates a lot..............sorry!!!!!!!! Good luck and good computing, Laffctx |

If you have the network card installed in your computer just click start, run and type winipcfg.
This will open a box with your nic's info in it. Make sure the dropdown box has your nic card in the window not ppp adapter. I assume the driver for your nic has been installed. |
