Ok, what I am attempting to do is use this card modem http://www.usr.com/support/3056/3056-ug/index.html on my desktop. My modem in my desktop is of very poor quality and it seems as if every PCI or USB modem I try with it experiences constant disconnections and low connect speeds. However, when I use this card with my laptop I have a very stable connection at 50.6kbps and never disconnect. The card cost me around 60-80$ and I would hate to have to buy another US Robotics PCI modem or USB modem just to find out it doesn't work as well as this one.
So.. I purchased this PCI to PCMCIA adapter http://www.buyextras.com/sypcitopcho...FQdSUAodvCmnPA Now, I have installed the adapter onto my PC by inserting it into my free PCI slot. Fit perfect, turned on computer, the adapter was detected and installed correctly. I checked its status in Device Manager and it says it is running correctly. Now, I attempt to install my PC card modem. I insert the card into the adapter, and it immediately identifies it as the correct US Robotics modem, and allows me to install the drivers successfully. However, when I check its status in the Device Manager, there is a yellow exclamation mark beside the modem's name. It says that there is a Code 12 error and that another device is using resources this one needs, or they are not available, etc. I do what the troubleshooter says for this problem and check to see if there is another device using my resources but I cannot find any all of the Basic Configuration settings it allows me to use cannot be found. Now I am at a loss as to what to do. Is there a compatibility issue between my computer, the adapter, and the modem? If so, why can I install and detect all of the devices succesfully? Is it a problem with my BIOS or something else? I have no idea... ----Please not: I have used this card successfully on 2 different laptops without any problem. I am not 100% sure on the meanings of the terms I/O, IRQ, etc... but I do notice when I install the card on my laptop it is assigned to a different IQR than my laptop's card adapter is (it is assigned to ISA 4 and the adapter is in PCI 20 i think).. However with my desktop the card is assigned to PCI 16 (same one as my adapter) and I think that maybe the resources it is trying to find just cannot be found in this area. ANY HELP WILL BE MOST APPRECIATED!! Any questions, please ask..Thanks everyone! Edit: My desktop is an XPS 700 (to help you guys determine motherboard type, available PCI slots, etc) Last edited by colbyh; 07-24-2007 at 04:08 PM. |
