ADSL faster?
I'm based in the UK. I just have installed a sky ADSL broadband on the 16MB connection however I am told I will get speeds of up to 8MB. I live very close to the exchange, just under a kilometer and thought I would get up to 16MB+ speeds but apparently not. I wouldve thought well ok, at least 11MB but it isnt the case.
My telephone line for ADSL is supplied by BT and I have reconnected it about 3-4 weeks ago. I am wondering, is there a way to make the ADSL speed go faster since I am on the 16MB connection but only getting up to 8MB? Is there something causing it to slow down and not being able to obtain the fullest possible speed? What factors can effect the phone line causing it to not give me up to the nearest fullest speed I have signed up to? |

Re: ADSL faster?
Hi,
It could be that your house/flat is connected to another exchange. Since your phone line is with BT have you contacted them and asked them how fast your internet can be. Here is a great website on to test your maximum internet speed. http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html Jay |

Re: ADSL faster?
I've looked at some websites which tell you which exchange you are connected to directly and seems to be just the one in the area which is under 1KM away.
The speed test shows up to 8MB and I've tried other speedtests too and indicate the same thing I think I did contact BT once but they said that its all down to the provider on how much they can supply to you and that the line has no restrictions - yeh, right! |

Re: ADSL faster?
Okay.
Sorry I forgot to mention, When i was looking into getting 16MB of connection BT told me that to get the 16MB its a different phone line that has to be installed to you home. bad I know but it is true. Now if you do want the 16MB's of internet connection you will be looking to pay for the new phone line. Typical of BT lol. Can I just ask how would you be using the upto 16MBs? Thanks and Sorry

Re: ADSL faster?
and how do I get them to do this? how much will it cost?
I would be using it for work purposes (I work in IT) at home in addition to other technical areas and just general downloads of software (legal) and what not :) |

Re: ADSL faster?
I think you would have to call BT and ask them how much it will cost and what it can be done, but then contact Sky and ask them how much of an internet speed you will get.

Re: ADSL faster?
i just spoke to them and they said that there is no such thing as upgrading the line or anything of that nature. They did a line check and came back 99.5% which is high quality....so I don't see why I am not getting the full speed even though I am on the 16MB connection

Re: ADSL faster?
Lol. They always do a line test. Take it from me, if you call them now and every 2 hours you will always get a different answer. I would email them about it.

Re: ADSL faster?
Well were with BT for both internet and phone line, they said that we would have to pay to get the 16mb phone line, we live over the road from the exchange and its not ours, so check that out again where your exchange acutally is.

Re: ADSL faster?
Okay, well they wont change where your exchange is. So i think youve got the fastest where you live.
