[SOLVED] dial up connection problems

I have a HP computer that's about 4 yrs old. It has a celeron 2.8 and windows xp on it. I restored it back to it's original state with the restore disks in preparation to give to a friend. I have been using dsl on it, but at one point it had dial up before that. This girl has juno premium ISP, so I tried importing her account. It wil dial and sound as if it connects, but then time out. It does this over and over. I talked to their tech support to no avail. Yesterday I decided to try bellsouth dial up since I have the bellsouth dsl with access to 10 hrs/mo of dial up as a back up. The same thing happened. I also was on with their tech support for 45 min last eve. I could barely understand the guy and he knew less than I. I have tried 3 internal modems and even an external usb one. The modems all check out ok. I used the winsock xp repair disk also. I have never had one that wouldn't connect at all. I had one recently that wouldn't connect with an internal modem but did with an external usb one. Would it help to do the restore over again in case some files are missing??? I'm really stumped on this one and have been working on it for 3 days.

Re: dial up connection problems

It could be your telephone line filters for your broadband.. Remove all of them from any phone point and then try again.

Re: dial up connection problems

I removed the filter and it connected immediately. I thought we had it worked through. Then after about 1 min it disconnected and is now back to the same thing....won't connect no matter what I do.

Re: dial up connection problems

Purchase a DSL splitter and install it at the telco service entrance. Run a direct line from the DSL port on the splitter directly to the DSL modem. Connect all of the other phone instruments to the telephone output of the DSL splitter. All of the DSL analog side wiring should be CAT3 or better twisted pair from the telco service entrance to the DSL/ADSL modem. You can use one of the twisted pairs in CAT5 cable if you have that on hand.

This is as good as it gets for DSL installations, and will usually solve in-house wiring issues.

Re: dial up connection problems

I have a dsl splitter on that connection. I'm trying to install a dial up connection for a friend that is getting this computer. She doesn't have dsl.
I took it to a friends computer shop this p.m. and he worked with it for 1 1/2 hrs and still didn't get anywhere with it. He tried all kinds of tricks and even turned off the firewall. The modem connects occasionally but after about a min it disconnects and won't reconnect. I'm ready to give up on it and give her the one I built that I use as a back up & just keep this one on my dsl. I have no problem with the dsl connection.

Re: dial up connection problems

yes, I used 3 different internal and 1 external modems. However, last night I finally got it working. It turned out to be the dsl filter. I changed filters and used a different outlet and it started to work. Thanks for everyones help anyway. it usually ends up being something silly like that.
